Ron Kalina one of the great Jazz Chromatic players passed on January 13. He was one of my Heroes. He was originally from Philly. I remember seeing him playing on TV in Philly when I was a kid. I'm glad I got to play for him once. ----------

He played in the philly scene he knew my teacher Larry Mckenna and my old ensemble teacher from Temple University Mike Natalie (old Mike Douglas show trumpet player). ----------
I only knew Ron through seeing him every year at SPAH. He was a very humble, sweet guy. He took a genuine interest in me and what I was doing - and I suppose many others he encountered. ---------- *************************************************** /Greg
Ron was a genuinely curious cat, generous in spirit.
I remember riding the shuttle back to the airport with him from a Buckeye harmonica convention sometime in the mid-1990s. He'd just started playing in a harmonica trio with Danny Wilson and Michael Burton and was showing me the charts he'd written for them. He was really digging the possibilities and kind of exulting in what he'd been able to arrange musically.
At the 2015 SPAH convention I was emceeing the evening show and he sang - something I'd never heard him do. The song was "For All We Know." At the end he and I did a sidelong arm-hug. It felt really nice to acknowledge him that way as a musician and a longtime friend. And he played great in 2016 as well.
Cherish your friends. My last exchange with Paul deLay was letting a fan drive him back to the hotel from a Mark Hummel Blowout when we'd planned to hang out. I figured there'd always be a next time, but, for all we know . . . =========== Winslow
