I have been working on improving my bends while tongue blocking and was curious if you tongue blockers can slap on to a bend. I am having trouble accomplishing this, but assume that those who are better at bending with tongue block bending can do it. Just wanted to confirm.

you can. keep practicing both and it will come.

I slap 3 draw half-step pretty often. 2-draw whole step not that much. YMMV.

Never even crossed my mind. Good post HS. I kinda had TB bends on the back burner, but that's interesting.

I'd like to hear an example of what you're talking about.

@ Slaphappy and Sarge...
Figured it was possible, but just needed more work. Thanks for verifying.

@Killa.. Yeah I have been doing more and more tongue blocking and switching over for the bends all the time kind of seems tedious so I thought why not learn to bend better while TBing. Then it occurred to me that you can likely slap the bends as well with practice.

@John M G.... Unfortunately I can't do the technique so I can't record a sample. I don't know of a recording offhand that has it, but i am sure there are some out there. Of you are not familiar with tongue Slapping in general there are a bunch of YouTube videos on this technique.

Here's an audio example of slapping to a bend (played on a stock Marine Band in A).

Thanks Winslow. What I found when I've tried it is that it dips quickly to pitch during the slap bit, and that's what I hear in your recording. Is that correct?

If you move your K-spot vertically into the sweet spot, any dipping will be minimal.

Here's a segment of the previous audio example, starting at about 0:29, slowed to 1/3 speed.
I'm rapidly moving back and forth between a chord and a tongue blocked bend. Hear any pitch dipping, or am I going directly to the bent note?

If you become one of the believers in having the arc of the mid-back of the tongue control the pitch, it leaves the tip of the tongue free for slaps, pull offs, etc.

By keeping the tongue arc "anchored" in place, you will eliminate those pitch dips.

I wasn't one of the lucky ones when it comes to genetic tongue gymnastics!
Don't know if I've got enough years left in me to conquer these techniques that I'm only just learning about way too many years after I started playing.
I'd be happy to get the side swipe going along with some decent tongue block chugging. A bit more speed would be useful too! :(

Yes, thank you, great to have an example. And thanks for the clarifications Winslow and Iceman. It's quite a wild sound isn't it. Nice.

Try this.

Repeatedly hit your pre-bent tongue blocked target note and then lift your tongue. This will help set up your pre-bent slaps. Once you've got your serial pre-bent lifts like that, sneak in a slap. It will be easier to just reverse the process and do a pre-bent slapped note.

Good luck,

Michelle
