@Littoral Can we agree that this contest is not about technique?
Clearly. Whether it should or shouldn't be is the basic question being discussed here.

If blues was judged on technique, most of my favourite musicians would be losers.

A few years ago, when Grady Champion won the IBC, he was trashed pretty well by the Harmonica Community. Later that year, he came through New Orleans, and came looking to meet me at a Jam Session. We got him on stage, and after listening to him, I came to the conclusion that his harp playing was better than barely adequate, his singing was pretty good, but his stage presence was outstanding. That is what the music going public is looking for. Then a couple of years ago, Jack Yoder made it to IBC from Colorado, and the harmonica Community Trashed him also. I personally know jack, because we competed here in New Orleans as a duo a few years ago, and would have won except for a well known Solo Player who is pretty famous around here. He did a real moving acapella number, and I told Jack that we just lost. We did. However, jack is a great guitar player, especially slide, and singer, and songwriter, and just used the harmonica to enhance specific songs. Again the crowd always loves him, and in the music business that is what counts. I know this is a harp forum, but maybe we should give credit for other musical and performance traits.

I keep expecting this thread to be gone!
I did a rehearsal with my band last night and afterwards the lead singer played me a song they want to work up. It's Dylan and the harp is just not acceptable. My ears hear differently because of what I do. But I still like the song and certainly dig Dylan.
