For $50 go for it!
You can change the element for a better one (a CM?) and you are going to have a good mic.

I personally think the Red Howler group of mics have more low end and much better tone. I know some people say there poorly put together. I bought two for $99 over a year ago, one to use the shell and one for practice. I seen no internal quality issues and one is still going strong. If you can't get great tone out of a Red Howler, there's something wrong in the chain!

You'll have an element that's on the harsh side. You'll have a shell that's on the large end of the spectrum, and very, very heavy. One of my 1st mics was a 520DX, like many others, I just thought "a green bullet" was going to be "the answer." I didn't know there were so many flavors of green bullet. Today? I wouldn't spend a dime on one "knowing what I know now."
JT30-based shells are better starting points if you want to mod them into a good working mic = they're plentiful and cheap, smaller and lighter. (Note the Hohner JT30 Roadhouse is NOT a true JT30. The connector is oversized and the 5Mohm volume control won't work for anything but a crystal element. All that can be fixed, but better to start with a "true" Astatic JT30 shell) ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

Iagree with the reed howler comment. I bought one at guitar center on sale for $ 29.99. It sounds pretty darn good. But it was my first and last bullet mic. It's pretty big n heavy. I prefer the sm57 style stick mics. Actually just got a few mics akai dm 13 and aiwa dm10. They re the best sounding mics i have i think. ....lol. I'll take the akai through a harp attack over a $300 mic anyday. ---------- "Trust Those Who Seek The Truth. Doubt Those Who Say They Have Found It."
