So as I have been starting to gig out more and more I am realizing how important volume is (and how tricky it is to get good volume without feeding back). I know that having a bigger and louder amp would solve this dilemma and make it easier for me to compete with the rest of the band, and hear myself, without having to worry as much about feeding back. Currently I am using a Digitech RP with a Peavey KB2 amp, which does get decently loud, but I am kind of craving a nice tube amp in my life right now and would love to get some suggestions for amps that have a good amount of volume before feedback, but that are also relatively cheap (like maybe in the 3-500 range?). I am thinking about maybe getting a VHT and then also getting a larger speaker cab, because I know they have speaker-out jacks on the back. Also the Harp Train seems cool, but I don't know if that is really any louder.. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks! ---------- -LeWin$key

I thought Pro Jr was generally recommended over Blues Jr. Anyway don't mess with that stuff that falls between two stools. Just get a bassman.

Thanks Goldbrick, i'll keep my eye out for a cheap Blues Jr., or is the Pro Jr. better like SuperBee says?
SuperBee- If you can find me a Bassman for 3-500 I'll take it! lol
shakeylee- when you say kinder, are you talking about the anti-feedback device? I was actually wondering if that works with solid-state amps or if that was just a tube amp thing.. Extension cab could be fun too. Oh and I live in Chicago btw if you feel like helping me shop, lol

i personally like pro juniors better than blues juniors, but some people don't. i would put my pro junior right in my top 3 favorite amps that i own.( i own a masco ma17,bassman reissue, pro junior, crate v18,two dano dm25's,a dm 10,etc.)
and yes i did mean the kinder AFB+ pedal. my only regret is not owning one sooner. my wife bought it for me about 7-8 yrs ago. i guess some prefer the squeal killer nowadays, but i'll stick to the kinder. it works on any amp,SS or tube. it can make amps that aren't so hot for harp, perfect for harp.
i will be chicago shopping :) ---------- www.shakeylee.com

Supe is right. You want to play live, get a Bassman. I looked for one for about 2 yrs. Bought mine for $450.00 and all it needed was spruced up a little. Haste makes waste my friend! My backup amp and go to gig amp lately has been a Fender Champ II with a Ragin Cajun and a 5751 in V1. Smokin little 18W amp with mid boost and MV. Circuit is freshened but stock. These go for 4-500.
Now for the sales pitch. I will sell the following amps. '76 Fender Super Reverb, '81 Fender 75, Silvertone Six Ten head...BN

I use a BJ and find it a good affordable amp but the opinion has been negative compared to the pro j
If you are physically strong cut to the chase and get a Bassman

I just don't "compete" these days. I've found a situation where we don't work with hundred or 50 watt players. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

If you play guitar too . Get a BJ ( well maybe that too...) . BJ has amore volume control, a tone stack, bigger speaker and good reverb, It is quite easy to resell if need be. Evreything you want for a gig where enviornment of the room can change the sound requirements
The pro jr, is very cool. I dig it- it rates high with amp snobs too and in a controlled enviornment it rocks. It excells at recording
However at a gig all bets are off as sweet spot can be hard to find with just tone and volume.
Guys will say-" oh, i just put xyz pedal in front and .... There you go it lost its purity, still has a smaller speaker and you gotta remember to drag more shit around with you.
Blues junior just goes plugs and plays
Just 2cents from a guy who has seen and played a lotta amps
Bassmen unless you play super well are overkill.
They are like red heads and corvettes-- everybody wants one- until they realize that for most folks its just expensive trouble
I am more a blues jr,- f150 guy who would rather have a brunette that can cook ( but thats what happens as you get older )

One option is a Peavey Duel 212. It is 120w with 4 6L6 power tubes and 3 12ax preamp tubes. You might need to sub v1 to a lower gain depending on your mic. It has a nice warm sound and is very pedal friendly. It is LOUD!!! Not all Peavey amps work well with harp, just like all Fender amps do not work well with harp. The Duel 212 is very harp friendly. However, you can get a Peavey for a lot less than a Fender so it might fit your budget better. It is nice to have an amp in your arsenal that the guitar player asks you to turn down because it is too loud! I don't play out as much as I used to and would like to see it get a good home. It is a great amp for outdoor venues and/or loud bands. ----------

Thank you all for all the suggestions,
Shakey- good looking out man, I think I am actually going to get that mic on Thursday. Seems like a good buy. I need to get more cash in my pocket before I can buy anything off Craigslist though. I've just got credit cards and checks in the mail right now, lol
Barley- I might be interested in that Super Reverb depending on what you are asking for it. You can send me an email through my profile with some numbers if you would like..
Goldbrick- I always appreciate your good suggestions paired with your good humor. The BJ is more appealing to me mostly because it has built in reverb like you said. Plug and play is nice, although knowing me i would still be adding some pedals.. I will be keeping my eye out for a good deal on a BJ (man it never gets old, lol)
Orphan- Sounds like an interesting option. Any one else have any experience with the Peavey Duel 212? The more I think about it the more I would like something with multiple speakers. Mixing and matching speakers just seems like fun for some reason, lol
Thanks again, ---------- -LeWin$key

yeah, that mic is a great one. like i said, you can hear one on a video on my site, through a bassman. not my finest work(it was a thrown together jammy thing) but it would give you an idea how they sound.
i also think the deville is a solid deal.i had one i traded my bassman for. i traded my deville to the deleware destroyers while on stage. it was pretty funny :) ---------- www.shakeylee.com

Let's break this down. You want a loud but affordable amp. Why bother with a VHT or a Harp Train? They are little amps. You are running digitech and effects? Why bother with a bassman, get a peavey or some solid state amp that you run your pedals through. I base my advise on the one clip you posted here of you playing some funk rap stuff, certainly not chicago blues. Check out the Quilter amps.

If you get a BJr you will inevitably want to use lower gain preamp tubes. When you do that beef up the cheesy plate resistors or you will blow them out. A new speaker will make a big improvement as well. I have a C Rex in mine and the difference is astonishing. But it's really only good in small rooms. For all the trouble you might spend some more money and go bigger. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, Georgia Blues raises a good point. Many newer tube guitar amps need some tweaking to be good harp amps. Be it a gain reduction, speaker swap, circuit mod, bias adjustment, many amps need something done. Amps over 20 yrs old often need a tuneup. Tube amps are fussy at times and this should be considered.
The advantage to tube amps is most can be modded relatively easily, not so with an SS amp. IMO tube amps sound wonderful!...BN

6SN7- I guess i'm not really looking at the VHT or HT anymore as they are too small. Solid state with effects is cool and all, but right now I am missing that real tube tone. For me the funky hip-hop stuff is more about rhythm and note choice than tone. At the end of the day I am looking for authentic gritty blues tone, but repurposed into new styles of music. The only effects that I really like to use are reverb and delay (sometimes very heavily to give things a dreamy psychedelic edge), and autowah.. Other than the rock/blues crunchiness of course.. Theres a good chance I will end up with the Duel 212 that Orphan offered me. It seems like it does clean and crunchy really well and really loud.. Its just so damn heavy, which might get old..
Thanks again! ---------- -LeWin$key

Go to a music store and play through what you find. Trust your ears, not us. I know you want tube, but give the Vox VT-80 a listen. It's a hybrid modelling amp with a bunch of amp models and effects, and gets very loud. All for not a lot of money ($350). It uses a 12AX7 at low power in the output section and feeds it into SS amplifier to make it loud. You might like it, you might not. Just DO NOT play it with the "guitar hero" presets unless you're fond of shrieking howling feedback at any volume level.
