Storing harps with foam dividers holds in moisture and promotes corrosion ect., stuff we don't want.
I started searching for dividers made of other materials and found a few options but I'd like to know if any of you have found something already. Here's an example:

if hetrick is still making cases he may be able to help u. I finally broke down and got a'REAL' harmonica case--not that u need to, I just finally wanted one---hetrick uses plexigass that are a little over 2/3 the height of harp--u can see the harp better, grab it easily, vertically stacked means more harps in the case----he cuts 1/2 way through the plexi vertically on both sides then slips them together--but definitely vertical for me-

"...vertically stacked means more harps in the case----he cuts 1/2 way through the plexi vertically on both sides then slips them together--but definitely vertical for me."
Yeah, me too. I want something like that but not the whole case -my case is great, I just have to get some dividers that aren't foam.
HETRICK'S Site say's: "We do not sell the dividers without the case...The value of this case is in the artistry and complexity of the divider system. These are made from expensive lexan plexiglass and take a lot of labor to construct."
I get that, I just dig my old tweed case and want (need) dividers.

Littoral, yeah, I'm looking for the same type of thing, but no luck yet.

Would be great if someone like Greg at Blows Me Away, or Tom at Blue Moon would produce plastic/plexi dividers....... I understand it would need to be profitable, and I for one wouldn't balk at paying for long lasting dividers sized for storing harps.

I want a Hetrick case with removable lid that holds 42 harps. If anyone knows how to find/buy/make as such, let me know!

I use 4 inch lengths of plastic waste pipe from a plumbing shop. Dirt cheap and you can glue them together with the plastic adhesive plumbers use. You will be able to make any pattern shape to fit your case. The wastepipe is approx 1.5 inches in dia and my harps fit perfectly.

@tookatooka, very functional and resourceful but not quite what I'm after.

Progress, maybe.
These plastic dividers are less than $1 each, 9.5” long and 4.5” tall. The square is 1-1/8”, which is just right. An inch would have to come off the height on one side or the other to make 3.5" for harps but the cut looks pretty easy. You have to choose a distributor and they’re all over the country, but none near me. Maybe somebody in one of these towns can check it out. Meanwhile, I’ll order 2 sets of 6 and see how it works. If it’s perfect I’ll stay all proprietary about it and never help any poor corroding sap that needs options for his dying harps.

I've not checked to see if they have what you want, but you might want to take a look at the uline catalog (online at uline.com).

They started as being the big supplier of cardboard boxes, but now they sell a massive array of stuff along these lines

If yo or you have a friend who has a radial arm saw, you can make a grid like Hetrick's out of plywood cut to dimensions you choose

No Joy at uline, but a search for plastic dividers at Grainger will turn up several options, including dividers that are 3 1/2" high by 9 2/3" long. They also have a 3 1/4 height option that is 22" and change. I don't see anything stating what size compartments any of this will make though.

Also a search for Akro-mils divider at Amazon turns up several 3.5" high options

LSB, you're right. Amazon search details a lot better than the company website. Thanks. I'll report results.

Also, Google search in shopping mode under Akro-mils with the part number will turn up places that sell singles, if you don't want to purchase in multiples.

You ve inspired me to build a nice case. I think I'm going to build it so the harps lay down tho. Why is everyone so against this style? I'm going to the flea market this morning to find a good briefcase to start with.

It's gonna be crazy if it comes out like i plan.

Also when building a vertical stack, as you are, how do you get the chambers tight enough so that the harps won't just bounce around, without the use of some kind of foam or padding?

Killa_Hertz "Why is everyone so against this style?"
Lot's of people lay them down. I think it's just more efficient standing up and labeling keys on the side help (paint pen and clear nail polish).
"...the chambers tight enough so that the harps won't just bounce around, without the use of some kind of foam or padding?"
The harps stick out taller than their slot so padding can go on top for travel.

I use Kydex thermoplastic in my "Compact" hybrid leather/plastic cases (7,14 & 21 harps). The harps stand upright in what I claim is the smallest, lightest harmonica case extant. A 14-harp case is roughly half the size of a six-pack.

A full description can be found here:

Compact 14

Kydex is floppy when you heat it but it gets rigid when it cools. You can mold it to most any surface. Holster and sheath makers use it a lot. I use it because it allows me to make a much smaller and lighter case than my all-leather cases. The thin plastic dividers afford a case that's both smaller and lighter than an all-leather case.

Thanks,

Michelle

I've purchased ABS sheets thru Ridout Plastics in San Diego. They will also customise to your specs.

http://www.eplastics.com/

@Littoral - If you need to shorten the divider by one inch you will have to remove 1/2" from top and 1/2" from the bottom.

Lottoral. ... ""The harps stick out taller than their slot so padding can go on top for travel."" ......

that's a good idea

Im making a case that can hold everything. Pedals, mics, cables, harps, etc. Briefcase style.
Im going to make a smaller one that will be vertical stack and hold all the necessities. I got both cases today at the flea market. I paid $4 for the both of em. I'll do before and afters. I gotta lot of trick ideas for the briefcase.

My favorite case i have right now is a little seydel 6 harp case. It's gotta be the smallest case possible for 6 harps. I carry it everywhere.

Kydex is a great idea. I have some kydex custom sidearm holsters. It would be perfect. Thanks michelle im stealin that one.

pretty good idea you have- I was thinking of the same thing for the harmonica holders for the part of my own case. however I have pretty much given up on trying to look for a case right now. The last case I tried to use an SRA case was just to cheaply made. bought them on amazon and one was damaged on arrival an the other had a defective top that could cave in with the slightest amount of pressure. I'm trying to find a lightweight case that could hold not just my harps and my pedals but my amp as well. I was looking for something that was maybe 36-40 inches long a foot wide and about 7 inches deep. nd fairly light in weight Haven't had much luck in what I am looking for without without paying big bucks for it. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions that would fit this bill I'm all ears

I am extremely happy with this case made for me by Max Maganelli (Bluexlab - see their Volume Controls too!)

It can carry everything I need for gigs. I really wanted a case that can carry not only my harps (diatonic and chromatic) but also two astatic style mics, the cable, my effects pedal (Boogieman) and small stuff, such as adopters, business cards, volume controls etc.

I love the quality build of this as well as its style. The red velvet and partitions are beautiful. Practical and aesthetic. Highly recommended.

Best
Roger

That's close to what I'm building now. That's alot more classic looking tho.
Very Nice. I dig the Tweed look.

Im going to dirty it up a lil. Make a Rat Case.

I spent years to get to this and it really works. When I get past the foam it'll be even better, but never done.

Little Roger-do you know if Blue X Labs ships to the U.S.? They have a small case I like but I can't find a price. I have asked on their website and Facebook page but haven't yet gotten a response.
