Hi there people,
I have an option on a pair of speakers. They're Fender PA cabs that originally came with the PA100 Fender amp. Two cabs, both 4x8, stacked. They look really cool. Speakers are Fender labeled Oxford. 32 Ohms. Two have been replaced by EAL(??) speakers. So 6 originals.
Not that pricey either...
So I was wondering... Will these make good harpcabs? Only other amp I know of with 8x8 is the Danelectro Commando. I've seen 6x8 before.
The cabs are closed back. Easy to open up, ofcourse, but maybe it isn't necessarily a bad thing with those 8 Inch speakers.
Are these speakers any good? Don't know them. Buying 8 new speakers will set me back a little.
The amp I'm using is a 4x6L6 cathode biased homebrew. I'm now using it in a 4x10 cab but was thinking of turning it into a seperate head and cab anyway.
I'm very curious if it will work. They sure look the part, though!
Any thoughts??
Cheers,
Jarno

I have two of those and the PA100 head. All OEM drivers. Ya, i thought the same thing. Man, they look cool. I have taken them out with different amps, IMO, they sound like SHIT. LOL. Sad but true. They might be better with $800.00 worth of Webers installed!!..BN

For what it's worth, I found quite a few negative opinions of Oxford speakers in Fenders on the guitar & amp forums.

Jarno, So, why 8's. 8" speakers are for 5-10 watt amps. OK in a coffee house or bedroom. You have a 100 W amp. You want four good 10's. 12" or 15" speakers work also depending on your taste. 10's are the preference for harp. Get GOOD musical instrument speakers. Forget old tired speakers from old stereos, organs, or old bass flappers ect. Spend some money and get good stuff. I found this out the hard way! Good luck...BN

Hey barley nectar. How do you find the pa100 for harp? Have you modified at all? The reason I ask if that I have one I have modified a fair bit and still on the search for the old school sound mods for it.

Thanks BN and the rest. I passed on the speakers. They sure look retro-cool, but they would be just another piece of equipment taking up space. The amps I know of with multiple 8s do seem like good amps for harp. Like the Dano Commando, the Gibsons with 6 or 4 8s. So I was tninking; why not? But if the speakers aren't any good it's not worth it.
I do use my amp with 4x10. It's in a tweed Bassman-ish cab that is falling apart. In another thread I was asking about 16 Ohm speakers for that amp to go with the two WGS veterans that are in there now. Would have been cool combining it with some 8s. As an experiment. WGS suggested their G10c or G10C/S(s=smooth). Might go with one of each.
Greets,

Bugfan. I don't know. The Big Head was thrown in on a vintage gear package deal I did years ago. I actually paid money for the 4x8 columns because I had the head. The speakers are mint. So cool looking. I have used the head a couple of times as a PA. It just sits in the basement with a towel over it. Never opened it up. I know it needs caps.
For harp mods, check the web for silverface Fender harp mods. It is basically a four channel Twin but you know that. That head would be cool if you play harp and guitar. You could voice the channels differently and use an AB switch for each instrument, utilizing all four channels on the Fender...BN

Thanks BN. It's sort of a hybrid twin I guess... bits of it is like a few other Fender amps. I wanted to make a cheap version of a sort of cross between a bassman and a twin with breakup for harp. I have made it into a stubby combo amp as well. (1x12 & 1 x10 alnico's) I have set channels up for clean to a more early breakup by playing around with the preamp voltages on each channel. Still needs more work. Maybe a valve rectifier even.

Well, you gota watch that. You may need 2-3 rectifier tubes to handle the current that beast draws. A GZ34 is only rated at 60mA. You will also need a 5V filament transformer to power the heaters. I'd say get a pedal for distortion. Easy/cheep...BN

Ah now I hadn't thought of that hiccup. Thanks for that info before i researched to much. Maybe a couple of sag resisters although they might have to be pretty large. I have been looking at that boogieman pedal from lone wolf thinking that would be the way forward.

Paul45 has one on the For Sale board. I have not tried that pedal but knowing it's pedigree, that should be an excellent choice. The BM is intended for PA/Clean amps in my opinion. Also would make a good backup rig as long as there is a power amp and speaker available to run it thru...BN
