i was tidying up and found a pair of RCA 7027A tubes i must have salvaged from something. am i right that these are able to be used as direct subs for 6L6GC tubes so long as pin 1 of the socket has not been connected to anything?

It all depends on how your amp is wired.
The 6L6GC does not use pin 1 or pin 6.
The 7027A duplicates Grid #2 on pin 1 and Grid #1 on pin 6.
But some amp manufacturers have the practice of using otherwise
unused pins on the tube socket as tie points for other circuit components.
Make sure your amp has no connections at these pins and your 7027A will work just like a 6L6GC.
