heres a shot of my 5 watt toys

left to right, Strauss SHW-10, gutted and about to be rebuilt, sitting on Fender vibro Champ XD, Epiphone mk 3, rebuilt as handwired, 6V6 version and further modified as per the Lone Wolf harp amp project, sitting on Legacy valve edition (same as Epi VJ mk2) modded as guitar amp with switchable gain and 4 stage (british and american) voicing, plus tone pot,
Kriesler 11-84 mantle radio converted to guitar amp (6x4 recto, 12AX7, EL84, internal 6"x4" speaker and jack for external cab), on 12" closed back Rola Plessey cab, home-built 5F1 clone in HG2 cab on Legacy Valve Head (same as Epiphone head) modded with 'alnicomagnet' blues harp kit, on 2x8" weber 8A100 cab,

Strauss was most horrid sounding amp ever played through. both Champs and the 2 harp-friendly Epi/legacy are very good. 12" cab is good, twin 8" cab needs bigger box. Kriesler is 51 years old in part and needs regular use...and tone pot is shot, but nice sounding amp when running properly

i didnt mention the mouse and pignose...pignose is shot, mouse is harsh but useful

i think the Vibro champ has line out, the legacy head has line out, 5F1 has 2 inputs...i could put the Epi combo at the end and have 4 connected

i think the larger cab of the Vibro champ has a positive effect on the sound too. i just noticed the bigger box when i was assembling them for the photo. the so called Strauss has a 10" and probably the crappiest box of them all and sounds like it too

OK, I'll join in when I can collect the heard. Supe, do you have any opinion on cabs made of 1/4 ply. I have one home built here that sounds huge and it has 1/4" ply cab. I think the dam cab talks, big time??

L to R, Top to bottom

'52 Merson Tempo, Merson's first consumer amp, I think. '67 Kalamazoo Model 2. '57 Oahu Bumble Bee, mint w/original cover. '40 Oahu lap steel amp w/MOT skin and bad FC 8" speaker, no knobs on this amp!

A few mics.

4x8 speaker cab from 4 school house speakers screwed together. I know, not an amp. '55 RCA Orthophonic stereo record player converted. Runs 2 SE 6AQ5's at 4W per chnl. Mint Fender Champ, SOLD. '68 Fender Bronco, one of a kind! '52 Gibsonette with Jensen 10" FC speaker.

A couple of closeups.

That's a nice group BN.
I dunno much about the cabs, I'm just starting to think about it. That twin 8 cab I have is a mistake. I asked a joiner to do the job and he didn't really understand what I was asking for...built me something like a hifi speaker cab. It's 19mm ply, built super strong with mitred corners, but not much room in there, just a little over an inch each side and the speakers are front mounted.
I think they need a much bigger box, but I dunno material or dimensions yet.

Cabinet construction is a big deal. They have to breathe and that's especially true for the low watt ones.

I really think (atm) the Vibro champ XD has the best sounding cab of all those in my OP. And it's a bit bigger than the rest.
I read something about the tweed Princeton 5F2A which I believe is kind of like a champ in a deluxe cab. I'm interested to try that kind of dimension for an 8" cab. Materials though, I dunno. I have a couple of closed back ported cabs with 8" baffles but they are chipboard. I think though I will put a good speaker in one and try it out. If it seems encouraging maybe build a pine or ply box. Not sure if there's much benefit from a 2x8" cab over two separate 8" cabs except ease of handling.

Barley, I have that same Merson! Bought it strictly for looks, to display in my music room. Fine little amp though! Not sure who made it, resembles a Premier or maybe a Masco.

Blueswannabe, That amp is all original so it gets played very little. I should not even plug it in due to old caps! It sounds unfreekin real. Sounds like a Les Paul into a cranked Marshall but 5 watts loud using a CM! No shit! This one is a '57 so it has a 12AX7, 6V6, 5Y3. The earlier ones used an octal preamp, 6SL7 IIRC.

Rick, The Merson is made by Merson I think. They eventually were tied in with Premier sone how. You see a lot of Tempo amps also. Department store stuff. Here's some info.http://www.vintageguitar.com/1740/univox-et-al-mersonunicord/

Well my story may be off a little. This amp has an 8" Utah FC speaker so it is probably earlier then '55. It is working and original also. More of a showpiece then anything. Cool stuff.

1847, man it sucks to be you..........BN
