i just noticed, the speaker in my champ is torn. it has lasted almost 60 years. i could probably repair it but at this time a recone is in order.
i have been looking for an excuse to try a low watt tone tubby speaker, maybe now would be a good time to try that. although i'd bet it would radically change the tone, not sure i could get use to it.
in the mean time i may just have to fit an adapter and use the 10 speaker cab i just assembled. a champ with a 10 speaker has got to kick some serious ass. ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space
so i think possibly the champ speaker may be 4 ohms the 10 inch speaker is 8 ohms will that be an issue? ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space
One Champ we bought actually had an 8 instead of a 4 ohm speaker. Our tech guy went through that amp and noticed this. He asked me if I liked the sound etc, and I did. His opinion was there was no harm so we left it as is and it's worked fine for over a year. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
I seem to be in repair mode regularly. Trouble shooting at set up ended with the IMP transformer. It worked the night before... I had another one with me. Then it was harps. 2 D's crapped out. Fortunately I had 3. Trudge on.
ok i go online, an 8 inch 4 ohm alnico low watt tone tubby is $120.00 shipped. i just cannot bring my self to pay that. i can replace the output transformer for $30.00 that has an 8 ohm tap. and use the speaker cab i just assenmbled with a 10 speaker. i,d bet that would sound great. but what the heck am i going to do with the vintage ot? let it sit around in a box till i die? like i need more boxes of stuff hanging around.
i suppose i could have the speaker re-coned for $50.00 but i would love to hear my amp with that 10 inch speaker.
perhaps super bee's advice would be best here. just use my vintage bassman, and the heck with all these other amps. ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space
1847 Running an 8 ohm speaker in a Fender Champ will decrease the power output of the amp somewhat due to impedance mismatch. This may also reduce your highs slightly. It will not harm your amp. I have not tried a TTuby but they are well rated. It will sound different (in a good way) then your old worn speaker and a new one will take some time to break in, so it will get better yet. You will be used to the difference in about 30 seconds. Lets see now, you got 60 yrs out of the OEM speaker but you hesitate to spend 120 bucks. Common! Those amps have earned their keep. I would not replace the OT, that is the heart of your tone. I run a 50 watt Weber 8F150 in my Bronco. It's a little bright but man will it cut. The Weber is LOUD and heavy. The Eminence 820H is a fine speaker for less money. My buddy chose that one in out homebrew speaker shootout. A ten will be cool also. I really like the Ragin Cajun but don't know if it comes in 4 ohm? You do not necessarily need a low wattage speaker. Big magnets make for a more efficient speaker. That being said, stay away from Alinco speakers, they have lower magnet strength that will be detrimental to your live band use. Lost in the mix. Rock on man. I love your tone...BN

i appreciate all the responses, i am agonizing over this simple decision. it seems easy enough, take the speaker out and have it re-coned end of story.
but i would like to try the tt speaker, just not sure if i will like it. a friend of mine has a hemp cone in his amp, it seems more prone to feedback and the sound is quite a bit different. also if i install a new speaker what about the old one? i can't just let a vintage speaker sit around broken, that means i spend another 50.00 having it repaired just so i can put it on top of the other re-coned speakers sitting behind me. lol
as far as alnico goes, the speaker in my amp is alnico, as is the low watt tone tubby "almost" every speaker i have owned, has been an alnico. the original speakers in my bassman were alnico rated at 9 watts!.... they are in my opinion what made that amp so desirable.

Yep, they have 8". One of the badest speakers I have played through. I have 2 - 10"s in my Bassman and 1-12" in my Noble ( Dano ). I prefer the ceramic. Check the dimensions ( on their web page ) and make sure it will fit. The ceramic has a pretty healthy magnet on it but shouldnt be an issue with an 8". Get the large dust cover in the options n get the ohms right. Any questions e-mail the tech dude and he will get back to you. I love these speakers.
i just looked, it appears none of their eight inch speakers will fit in a tweed cab.... isn't thay odd? ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space
What you say? No weber fit a tweed cab? I see, they say that about all the vintage series, but the signature series 8"s do fit tweed cabs. I wonder why that is too.i suspect my 5f1 cab is a mojotone cab so i cant even do a useful study
so instaed of buying a new speaker for my champ i decided to use one of the speakers i have just sitting here collecting dust. i ordered a 10 inch cab online, then i took it down the street to line -X bedliners, and had it sprayed. it come out really nice.
did anyone care for the rl burnside track i posted with james cotton on harp?
---------- if you appreciate what you have... it becomes more.
hmmm...well i let it play all the way through...the harp part...i cant knock it but i wasnt inspired, and pretty much the same comment overall...i'd have to be in the mood, which is a pretty seldom mood for me...i was more interested in your song quiet as a mouse by a rather long measure both for the story and the harp, and i want to hear the rest of the song
thanks supe.... i am at a loss for words. i am a huge bob dylan fan, for someone to prefer one of my half done compositions over one of the most prolific song writers of our generation is a huge honor. thank you!
i would encourage everyone to have another listen to the burnside track. first of all, it is not a straight 12 bar blues, he is only using 3 chords, but the progression has a twist, i am still trying to figure it out, it is a hard song to count. i tend to like songs that deviate from straight 12 bars.
it took me several listening's , to realize that it was cotton on harmonica. but, what i enjoyed most was derek trucks solo at the end. instead of me trying to copy the harp solo, working out the slide guitar part is much more challenging, and rewarding experience. it helps to turn up the volume.
my original post was about finding a speaker for my champ. the cabinet was supposed to be sprayed only on the outside with the truck bed liner, but they sprayed it inside and out, this thing is bullet proof. the ten inch speaker sounds great. just wait till you hear this amp in the right setting. outside at a back yard bbq, with players that know how to control their volume. i hope to dispel the notion that a 5 watt amp sounds like a kazoo, or that it will not carry, and will hold its own under the correct circumstances. in the mean time, it will be perched on top of my 4 10 bassman you want loud? 5 tens should suffice. peace coop.

ok it is a 12 bar for a few passes then he switches to 8 bars 4 bars of the one chord then 2 bars of the 5 chord then2bars of the 4 chord ---------- if you appreciate what you have... it becomes more.
so it turns out that tone tubby can re-cone my speaker, sounds like a good deal to me.
and by the way the derek trucks most likely used a tone tubby on the above solo. ---------- if you appreciate what you have... it becomes more.
