so i dropped my mic a jt 30 with a ceramic element. it hit harder than bruce jenners escalade on pacific coast highway. so i planned to install the shure r7 crystal that my neighbor gave me. come to find out it is dead and not working. it is not cool to see a grown man cry. i have the good fortune to have my own personal technician, who was able to fix it. not sure how he pulled that off. he said he took pictures. it may be another week until i get it back. he says it has a strong output. cant wait to try it out.

What do you mean, that he repaired a crystal element or the mic? ----------

he repaired the element, so the crystal must of still have been in good shape, perhaps a loose connection internaly. ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space

what is interesting is, i gave him that element before, and he said there was nothing he can do, it is kaput. now all of a sudden it has full output. LOL

what is evem more mysterious is the ceramic element cannot be repaired. which if i turn the amp up and smck the mic it works fine. for a minute anyway. i am hoping my buddy stops by later for a beer,or i will have to wait a week or so to grill him ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space

@1847 -- What I suggest you is to sign up to a website called Photobucket, which is free and once you upload those photos, each one will have a link that you can copy and paste to embed them. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

the crystal is inside the black plastic .....the plastic is adhered with varnish like you find on a transformer it separated, he used epoxy to connect it. there is a pin that may still need to be glued. the mic sounds incredible. at 3 on the volume i have no feedback "on my champ" i can turn it to 12 and the sound compresses with very little feedback. i heard somewhere that is how they sound just before they give up the ghost, so i am cautiously optimistic i have my fingers crossed.. he is taking another look at the ceramic element that one is much more difficult to take apart, it is swedged together. he said he does his best work when he knows he cannot damage anything. and that element is toast so we wll see if he can revive it.

About 10-11 years ago I had a couple one literally was D.O.A. but it was really the mic I was after and the other I bought from a guy in either Spain or France and it worked great for about a year and one day it sort of cackled and was kapoot! But when the good one worked you could hear why they are/were so highly prized...amazing!

I ran across a guy with a business called West-Tech services who gets dead crystal phono pickups going- he just did one for me for a 1939 Philco wireless turntable. I asked about reviving old Astatic and Shure crystal mic elements and he said "piece of cake, but why would you want to- they were no good when new." I told him I was a harp player and we covet these things and he told me to send him one to bring back to life. $45 with return shipping. He is still of the opinion that a Shure CR element is about a million times better but I'm gonna mail him a dead Astatic and see what happens.

I have an Astatic 332 which has crapped out. But it may be a connection or the on-off switch. Will likely get it to my electronics guy soon. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

If the little button of glue, on the diaphragm, looses its grip on the drive pin. the element will go low output. I repaired my CM with one drop of super glue on the old glue button. I believe the crystal elements are built in a similar fashion...BN

hey slim, he is not really a harp tech, just a buddy of mine that is pretty handy fixxing things.
barley, that is the other issue with the element, the drive pin needs some adhesive. he was afraid to touch it, he has never seen one of these before. so thanks for confirming that, i will mention it to him. ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space

Very interesting thread. Suddenly there's a cottage industry looking for all those crystals thought to be dead with no hope of revival..,

i think i got lucky with the r7 crystal, time will tell
he just sent a photo of the asatic ceramic he is working on. i will try to post a picture but that is very dificult to do on this site, for me any way.
he managed to get it apart, but now there is a membrane of very thin aluminum, that may get destroyed, renedering the element useless. ---------- if i type in the correct captcha why is my post lost in cyber-space
