I can't really tell you which are best, but I can point you in the right direction. You want jeweler's needle files.Their courseness grading is a bit confusing, but I think a 2 would work. A 4 would be finer and an 8 is really fine. Here's one link, you could also check out Rio Grande.

I'm not sure if I got the spelling correct or not, but the brand I recall is Grobet, which I believe is in one of the tools in the Richard Sleigh tool kit. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

When it comes to files, if you're in need of removing a lot of metal, go for course, and when you get closer to ideal pitch, go for a very fine one. Some flat ones may take too much off in one shot and some triangle ones can be just as bad, but that's gonna vary quite a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer coming from my own experience. Except for the ones included in Richard Sleigh's tool kit and the one from Seydel, the two biggest weaknesses of those tool kits coming from most harp manufacturers tend to be the files and the screw drivers, which tend to be really cheapo, horrible quality crap made in China and you couldn't bribe me to ever want to use them and in the case of the files, I've found them to have far too many problems with burrs than something made of really high quality, plus high quality stuff can take more of a beating and tends to last a helluva lot longer. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I've spent quite a bit looking for a nicer file. Recently I got 3-square from Richard and quit wasting money. I dunno what part number it is, he might tell you. The next best thing I've used is an inexpensive part number W123C ignition points file from the auto parts store or eBay. Which I used for several years before getting Sleigh's, and still use for squaring up reed tips. ---------- www.spiersharmonicas.com

For steel reeds I prefer the file Seydel sell, which is an F. Dick flat file grade 3. The file Richard sells is a Grobet 3 square grade 0. I prefer it on brass reeds but the more aggressive file is better on steel for me. The grade 3 is also ok on brass but go easy because it can be a little bitey if you get impatient. Flat or 3 square is pretty much down to how you like. Bit like whether your reeds are 7.5 or 8 mm apart...you get used to one or the other but it's not a big deal

#2 should be really good. I'd like some of those ceramics. I use manicure sanding wands for fine tuning and tidying up rough spots and burrs. They're pretty good, I just cut them shorter as they wear out on the tip. Good on brass, not so good on steel.

Hey yeah I know...Nate even thanked me for a half dozen of mine the other day...I think he expressed gratitude for several of yours too (he said 'thanks for all the great posts' when noting we each had 3000 up)
Funnily enough, I get more spams since I passed 3000....hey Nate? Do you reinstate all the posts from the sub-forums too?
