OK,
Just got a nice old 270. Pristine except that the spring and pin are missing. Any help out there?

Joe Leone (smojoe) from Slidemeister says, "replace the spring with a #2 safety pin." He apparently likes these better than original equipment.

As far as the pin the spring mounts on, I never heard of THAT being missing, just occasionally rusty. I tried a search on Slidemeister without success. It would seem to me that any steel rod of appropriate diameter could be cut as a replacement. Or you could see if Hohner stocks them. Or you could ask around for anyone with a bad 270 comb but who still has the pin.

If you are part of Slidemeister you could ask over there.

Doug sure knows tons more than I on this subject, but I just had one repaired my George Miklas. I would be amazed if he couldn't help you. You can find his web-site at harmonicagallery.com
By the way Doug; since mine is now repaired, maybe you will give me a couple chromatic tips at Harmonica College 4 in Huntington WVA. this next April,2016.

Georgia Blues You can make the pin from a common nail of the correct diameter by cutting it to the proper length proper. I've done it a few times.

@Georgia Blues
Please let us know how you get this fixed! I have never replaced the pin that holds the spring, and am interested in the outcome. I have no doubt that George Miklas could fix you up with repairs and check out the instrument for other issues. George knows his stuff, and it would be worth contacting him. I was going the low budget self help approach in my response.

EDIT: Piro39 knows his chromatic stuff, too!

@KC69
As far as any chromatic tips I could offer, I am always available to answer any questions and offer any tips when I am at HarmoniCollege. I am happy to help out with providing assistance within my areas of competence. Also, Danny G. usually attends and there have been other chromatic players who have come despite the focus being on diatonic playing, and they may have useful information to share.

We have had a lot of good diatonic instructors at HarmoniCollege to answer diatonic questions. I occasionally have helped clarify diatonic issues after the workshops when people have been confused, like the circle of fifths, positions, etc. Jim Rumbaugh also offers help. I like the idea of sharing info among attendees beyond the class instruction time. It is like an advanced seminar class where participants inform each other and share tips.

I am looking forward to the wonderful WV setting, the food, the jamming fun, the friendly people, and Jason's teaching. Every time I have been at any harmonica workshop and Jason has taught I have learned a lot. Just listening to him play is an education. Then I have to try to digest it all and bring that info into my playing until next time...
I am looking forward to it!

Actually, that's not a bad idea and the slide springs in Hohner chromatics tend to have far too slow of an action for me, personally, and on models that are cross tuned, like all of the 16 holed chromatics since the mid to late 60's, which already has a longer, slower slide throw to begin with, it exacerbates that tremendously. I'm not positive about this, but I think that there are some old time chromatic players who have also developed their own spring set ups as well.

Bob, I've seen a sort of leaf spring arrangement screwed into the side of the comb. Sort of steam punk engineering. Updates to follow shortly.

Well Piro! it worked like a champ. Safety pin and cut nail did the trick. Thanks for the good advice!
