I know that this amp was really popular for awhile. Don't hear much about it anymore. I just bought the head version to run with a project cabinet with a couple of vintage 6x9 ovals. Sounds pretty nice in stock version but I'd appreciate suggestions to modify for improved feedback resistance and to improve the tone stack which seems a little lifeless right now. I don't need more distortion. I'm generally going for nice round horn-like tone and I pretty much have that now.
Thanks in advance,
Jay

Check a google search for the different Mods ... Theres a few ways you can go with it. And a few already worked out kits. Mike Fugazzi has a page on it. Mine has the Jim Rossen Mods. Theres plenty of info out there bro.

Here is mine with not circuit mods:

I think this is modded:

I really liked the amp. I just got lazy and decided since I needed a vocal monitor, I might as well just go direct.

Truth be told, the only thing I didn't like about the VHT was the tolex. In some ways, I regret not having one still. This is especially true since they went up in price.

Whenever I hear amp demos, whether live or on audio/video recordings, I wonder about how much is the amp, how much is the mic, and how much is the player.

If I know that the sound I am listening to is from an above average player with good tone and mic technique, I still don't know how much of the sound is from the amp and how much from the mic.

@HarpNinja
Do you remember what mics you used in these recordings?

Doug - you're correct to be skeptical. Not only is the player very influential, the room, the recording equipment, how the amp was mic'd (was this an iPhone in the back of the room or an amp mic?), how the file was compressed for transmission over the internet, how you're playing it back - ALL of these make significant differences. What you're hearing is always MOSTLY the player. If you hear the same player play two different mics on the SAME RECORDING, or two different amps on the SAME RECORDING, played back through the same system you can draw more informed conclusions.

Always fun to play around with a new rig even though I probably won't change from the rig I use with our band. The VHT Special 6 head sounds very good with my 2 x 6x9 oval speaker cab. I've been using this cabinet for recording. I bought the amp used at a good price and, of course, it came with a well used 6V6. I've replaced it with a new JJ and a JJ 12AX7 that I like. The only mod so far was to remove the bright cap. I need to take it out and play it before deciding about more mods. I would like to make it a little more feedback resistant so feel free to share your experience!

Thanks, Mike! Now I have a pretty good idea about the VHT Special 6 sound, original and modded, though the different rooms affect the recordings to the point that I am uncertain as to what is the room and what is the mod. Regardless of that, you make that amp sound good.
