I just installed a MC 151 element in my jt30 and I can tell its strong, but I wonder if I mod the input to my amp if I'll get more from it. How important is it to have a dedicated input for crystal mic?

Nice but not essential, if you already have a typical input load (~1Meg) already. You may get a little more touch sensitivity & slightly fuller sound, but you're not going to suddenly get a load more output from the amp. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Thanks Mark. 'Fuller' could be good. I do find this is lacking in that way, compared to my best CR/CM mics. I have a few amps with 2 inputs, mostly I plug into the lower gain side, so potential to set them up with a dedicated input for crystal.

The Radiotron Handbook says crystal mics want to see a 3Meg load for best bass response. Don't know how much difference that will make as I don't use crystal elements.
Hi Mark, good to have you here. Cheers mate...Goose

I've not used one before. This shell had a weak turner crystal and a 1 meg pot...I never gigged it because it didn't have much going for it...except I did like...hard to describe...there's kind of a dynamic curve and it doesn't bottom out...doesn't seem to be a sudden cutoff..I dunno what I'm saying...anyway, a guy nearby had this mc151 NOS so I took a punt. I do like the sound of it but the bottom could be fatter I think. Another guy nearby is telling me 8meg sounds best to him...but maybe I'll try 5 and see what I think

Ah yeah, 1847, I see that terminator pedal looks like a good gadget...but for me it's $130 of my Australian play money, plus postage...the Australian reseller adds a premium on top of that...so yeah, a bit of extra lead poisoning coming up to add to the base load... Today I was gonna do the 'lone wolf mod' to my valve Jr....I have 3 valve Jr amps...one I built a new board for, and converted to 6V6...which for what I dunno...it ain't great...but it's a mark 3 with the 5k OT and I think the earlier versions with the 8k would be better...and so...I thought to swap the OTs between a couple and mod this home made board and install a tone pot and beef up the input for the crystal... And I go on the LW site and find they have dropped the project from the site...ah well, things move on. I think I printed it out already...prolly around here some where
