As we move along with opening The Smiling with Hope Pizzeria I am reminded how I am much more comfortable creating my own universe than plugging in a system. I feel blessed to be able to do this and work with people with developmental disabilities. they are transparent and that is where I feel comfortable. Most "normal" people wear too many layers of masks and it makes me too uncomfortable to around. Like the 25 year overnight sensation, this dream has taken about 30 years of working towards to get to and I feel good about paying my dues to finally arrive :) Here are some songs that came out about never fitting in the norm and living your dreams. They can be found on the player below. Walter

Good on you Walter. My wife and I are finalizing plans for opening a coffee house. It is a dream that had been brewing for a good 25 years. Live music & open mic nights are part of the plan. She's going to be retiring from her job in no more than 17 months. Sooner if we open up next fall like planned. Me, I'm only 50, and like you said, I'm tired of working in someone else's system to help them build their dream. All the best to you man.

The organization that my wife works for helps the physically and mentally disabled to live independent lives rather than being cooped up in an institute of some sort. They're a segment of the population that is dear to our hearts too.

Good luck with your efforts. If this is your passion -go for it.

I cant get with the solo thing tho--part of the great musical experience is the give and take you have with quality musical partners that creates a rich stew that expands musical horizons

Being uncomfortable around " normal people " is a whole nuther mishagas. Kinda like those folks who are only comfortable with pets or in a cabin far from civilization

I believe if it is your calling-- thats awesome--just dont discount the rest of the pie even if there are a some fuck -ups inhabiting the planet

retreating is a bad battle strategy-- Arriba

2chops: Much success with you venture and maybe you could hire a person or 2 with disabilities?? Running the empire is lot more satisfying than following orders. We will not have any music acts play other than my set up. It gets into too much old stuff for me dealing with musicians that I prefer to leave in the past.

Goldbrick: I am a very personable person I am told. I just prefer transparency. Yes, working with disabled people is my passion. Playing with others is a joy too for me as long as they are ones I can groove with. I have 4 people like this and 2 live within 10 minutes of me. Having run a full time band for 20 years got old due to on or more members not really inspired by my music and or unavailable. Now as a 1 man band I have total creative freedom and can play anytime I want. FYI that song "lets work together" was written and recorded as a 1 man band by my 1 man band mentor Wilbert Harrison :-) Walter

Walter... When we do get to the point of hiring, we would definitely consider bringing a disabled person on board.

Goldbrick: I get in now :) Sadly Wilbert never made a dime on Kansas City or Lets Work Together. He had almost an anti business sense. It was sad to see him live in poverty while most of the world knew his songs.

2chops: That made my day! I figured you would but had to ask. We are planning on 4 employees with disabilities. They will work 4 hours a day and we will have 2 at a time working. Here is a link to our progress in the shop. It has been 80+ hour weeks for the past month since we got to Reno. Most of it for me has been scrubbing and cleaning and my wife handling the business ends. Walter
