I'm in the market for a 16-hole. So far I just have the CX-12 which I really like but I want the lower octave now..
What the difference between the Hohner 280/Chrominica and the Super Chromonica? Is it just the cover plates that are different? Any opinions on either one?
Is the 64X worth the extra money?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Check out Easttop harmonicas. New Harmonica.com carries them. They're made in China, but are of incredibly high quality. They have a variety of 12 and 16 hole models. One year warranty, too. Best bang for the buck I've ever seen.

I have an Easttop 12 hole that I really like, and a Suzuki. You could just also get a tenor 12 hole, that gives you the lower octaves and keep the size of the 12 hole. People seem to like the CX-12 tenor. Seydel makes them too.

The difference between a 280 and a Super 64 are the cover plates and the cover plates do affect the sound. The covers on the 280 makes the harmonic play a tad louder and more aggressively whereas the covers on the Super 64 Chromonica mellows out the sound a bit more, plus the mouthpiece on a Super 64 is silver plated and the mouthpiece and covers on the 280 are nickel plated brass.
The Super 64X in the bottom two octaves uses a double thick reed plate, which increases the volume and aggressivenes of the bottom 2 octaves quite a bit, but if you haven't taken the time to master breath control and you have a tendency to use too much breath force, you run the risk blowing it out quickly and until you get that under control, I wouldn't recommend the Super 64X.
Hering makes chromatics that play quite easily out of the box and because of the raised mouthpiece design, they are also the easiest to bend a note on for an entire 1/2 step. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

The 64x definitely has a big sound on the bottom end, It's the one Stevie Wonder plays when he plays Hohner. (He's officially a Hohner endorser but is often seen playing a Suzuki Sirius.)
If you want to stay in the same price range as the Hohner 64 or Super 64, I'd also suggest the Suzuki SCX-64 and the plastic-combed East Top.

I do have a Hering 64 baritone inC that I like a lot. Prob with Hering is getting replacement parts, or used to be. I've treated this one very gently so as not to do damage and need a comb assy, which used to take forever to get from Brazil. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
