I can see why you'd think it's a drum mic, but it isn't.
Here's the lowdown on it and a link to the Electro Voice data sheet is at the bottom of the page.

I believe it's a Ham Radio mic. I think I have a 603, but it's always been too hot for any of my amps. They have a following in the harmonica community.

David Barrett has got them on the front of some of his books... http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0786661089/ref=pd_aw_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=51PabqFHq3L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL100_SR100%2C100_&refRID=0W5CBCCGFNZQ7WEDSYJ3

I have one. They look really cool, like a prop from "war of the worlds". That 50:s futuristic vibe. Sound really good, too. Massive bottom end.

That's a good harp microphone. I got one years ago from Tom Ellis (Tom's Mics in Texas). I have a list (not with me) of my preferred mike with certain amps -- I know the 638 is preferred with one of them -- sorry can't tell you which. It is a bit like a small bullet, so pretty easy to hold.
