This may seem a little redundant from my earlier post but I'm a bit confused re passive v active.
From what I've been reading, most prefer active speakers with a passive mixer, claiming better sound and much more versatile.
For a band doing small to medium venue gigs, which way should I go, passive or active mixer?
Thanks for any advice.

Personally, I'd go passive mixer and active speakers. You can scale it down or up based on the venue and gives you much more flexibility.

Both can work. I would balance brand, power, weight, effects, and cost in order to decide.

Edit: This post was lost in spam filter for a day, so I just corrected some typos after it showed up.

I would buy a passive mixer and rent powered speakers as needed like KingoBad suggested. Way more versatile.
