I've got a question, but first a tip of my hat to Adam for this and other great lessons. They are well thought out and communicated, as well as demonstrated. My question has to do with hitting the right bends on this lick. First, Adam is playing a D harp. While my ear is getting better all the time and I usually do my best to hear what notes to play, I do occasionally check myself with a tuner. In this case I was also able to use a tuner to determine what notes Adam is playing in some parts of the lick. My question is this: the first part of the lick is a triplet with the four hole draw to five hole draw back to the four draw. Then Adam says to hit the four draw bend hard and deep. I worked this out and it sounds good, and, I think, pretty close to what Adam is playing. However, when I looked my tuner the four bend I was hitting was D not Eb. I then checked what Adam is playing there and it's also a D. This note is below what is shown, for example, on Lee Oskar's Major Diatonic chart. So,the question is: is it correct to hit such notes (in a given situation)? Is that an overdraw?
Thanks, Rich

I haven't listened yet, but I would say it's correct if it sounds good. It may not sound good.
It's not an overdraw. It's just bent past the note. Very common, easy to do, often sounds horrible and endangers reeds especially when combined with powerful inhalation. But can be a good effect.

Thanks Superbee. I don't try to get bends like that - here I was just trying to match what Adam is doing (and, of course, he sounds good). By the way, what is an overdraw?

interesting to try that lick using the 4 blow instead of the super-flat 4 draw
an overdraw is to an overbend as a blow bend is to a draw bend.
overdraws are available on chambers 7 - 10...while drawing you choke the closing reed...the draw reed...and make the blow reed play as an opening reed.

I wonder if you missed an important detail in the triplet? your question reads like you might have. The triplet is:

4',4d,5d

so the opening of the lick is 4',4d,5d, 4'

I don;t know if that helps with your question. Thanks for posting that video, I am going to work on it.

Jerry,
Thanks for pointing out that it's a bent four draw, then a non-bent four draw, up to the five draw and back to the bent four. I wasn't listening to Adam explain (or well enough to the lick). Got it now. Thanks again.

Sure,

it's a great lick, but I find it interesting that it sounds like crap on my MS Series Pro-Harp but is sweet on my marine band??

it might be the MS is out of tune,

I'll have to keep working on it, it's coming together.

Cheers
Jerry
