On the first Canned Heat Album, the track "Help Me" has a BIG harmonica sound with extra low notes. What was Alan Wilson playing? Are we hearing recording studio effects/processing magic or just a certain kind of harp? Chromatic? What key?

Just a B harp played in 2nd position.

rainman is exactly right: no extra notes, no studio magic. Just plain old 2nd pos playing with an aggressively sounding amplifier.
