A while back I wrote a an article for "Harmonica World" on backup harmonica. You can see it here.
Many players (myself included) overstep the mark at times with backup. It's often a case of "less is more", sometimes nothing at all is best. My article explores this in detail, and outlines simple harmonica backup strategies for blues and bluegrass.
Hopefully this is useful, please add your own views. ---------- Tony Eyers Australia www.HarmonicaAcademy.com everyone plays...

Good article.
As a former guitar player, I love comping behind vocalists or soloists, but it's a constant struggle to add and not detract from them.

Great article and very good topic. I enjoyed that. I find bluegrass a little easier to play back up on because the harmonica can do a pretty good chop chord imitation. Blues seems a little hard for me because I find all I can pull off without being in the way is fills. Fills are great and have their place, but I once heard that good musicians make space while bad ones fill it up. Sometimes too many fills can just make the song too busy.
