I never thought of the Cruncher as bright. Are you used to playing through another amp that you perceive the cruncher as bright in comparison to? What amp?

It also seems like you bring up two different things: too bright and can't get that crunch -- not sure how those are related; say more.

Any amps where you "get that crunch?" which amp(s)?

The Cruncher is a world class amp. One of the differences, though ANY amp, between the men and boys - is how tightly you cup. A tight cup dramatically reduces the highs.

Beginners haven't learned that yet. They turn their bass way up and their treble way down and favor mics with less high frequency content. Advanced players turn the bass down and the treble up, and get a warmer sound, with more dynamics when they open their cup up.

If you're still learning, mic choice IS more critical. I can help you with that. My new Bulletini mic might be just right for you.
