Hello everyone. I am a fairly new player. I have been teaching myself from videos, and a few other ways, like Ronnie Shellists flash drive tutorials. I am progressing well with technique, and I can play....however I am as green as they come as far as theory, and understanding arrangements, scales, and progression. I understand the I,IV,V chords, the 1,3,5 chords...to an extent. Does anyone have any tips, books or videos to help me grasp these concepts/theories. I can't seem to find much out there. At least that explains it on a level that I can understand. It's frustrating in the sense that I can play, but can't piece things together and feel or sound right. I appreciate any and all help.

I recommend taking your time watching the free YouTube videos Michael Rubin made. They touch on theory and as it applies to the harmonica.

The answers are there in Winslow Yerxa's Blues Harmonica for Dummies. My theory was reasonable when I came to the harmonica, but the twist is how the notes and chords lay out on the harp and I think he explains that very well (for 2nd position then 1st and 3rd).

Agree with Michael Rubin's videos and Winslow's book. I also recommend Dave Barrett's bluesharmonica.com for a beginning student who wants to learn how to apply theory to solos and accompaniment. ---------- Marc Graci YouTube Channel

That's great Michael Rubin. Contact info? Through your YouTube page info? I think that will be a good idea for me to do

I second both Micro and MindTheGap. The Harmonica for Dummies book does a good job explaining how the I, IV, and V chords and how they fit in the 12 bar blues. I also recommend Dave Barret's lessons on improvising. He covers the 12 bar blues through what he calls chorus forums (basically having a lick that you alter slightly as the chord changes). I learned a lot from it.
