G'day, I have a bunch of Seydel 1847 plates atm. when i was checking them to look for bad reeds, i noticed that all the draw 7 reeds were relatively flat, even compared to draw 3 which i would normally expect them to match. i'm wondering if this is some seydel-specific twist on tuning that ive never heard about, or is my client just tough on 7 draw reeds...

are they mostly lower keys? maybe he is blow bending the draw reed flat doing jimmy reed stuff.you might want to double check them for fractures.

if i find a note flat i just fix it
so i am not sure if there is a propensity
for that particular note to be out of tune more that any others.

i have done bonehead things like not adjusting the tuner to 440 for that note

Thanks fellers, the player is a wiz all over the top end, so quite possible he hammers that reed in an OD for instance..though I would expect the blow reed to be more effected by that...
I was comparing to 3 draw and the 7 was consistently lower, up to 20 cents lower according to my ca 40.

I haven't repaired a lot of steel harps, have only owned one, never broken or flatted a reed, still getting a sense for how the steel reeds behave. If a brass reed had dropped so far from factory tune I'd be def replacing it. I kinda had the idea the steel reeds don't drift like brass, stay in tune right up until they break, but nothing to base that idea on except vague memory of forum hearsay. I'm replacing lots of 9 slot reeds in these plates, and a couple 4s.

Player is probably hitting the major 7th in 1st pos... or sliding up to the 7 draw on songs like "Don't Get Around..."

They will go bad, although not as frequently as the blow 7.

Typically, on holes 7-10, when the top goes, the bottom is on the way. I almost always replace both regardless of which goes out.

@Super Bee -- There's a tuning chart that you can download for free that shows the exact tuning scheme for Seydel harps OOTB and here's the link:

Diatonic Harmonica Tunings

Just clink on the link on the page and it all shows up there for you.

Thanks Greg and Bob. Of course draw 7 should match draw 3. I was sent a bunch of naked plates to repair and i was checking them with a device which makes it easier to check reeds off the comb...so now i have obtained a comb and some covers and extra hardware and will check these again in built-up form before i make a conclusion...
Unfortunately they arent matched sets of plates, so i cant infer much from the state of the blow reed...but the flat draw 7 seemed so consistent on over 10 plates i thought maybe there was something screwy. The player mentioned he is hard on 4,5 and 9, but didnt mention 7.
Anyway, thanks again
