Hi, I bought an amp head on Ebay recently (haven't gotten it yet), and I am looking for speaker and cab (open/closed) recommendations. The head description was mid to late 60s Decco(a?) head 12 -15 watts. Tubes currently are 2 12 AX7s, 2 7189s (amperex) and a 6ca4 tube rectifier. My friend Jeff Mason, a local and longtime Seattle harp and trombone pro, suggested a single Eminence Cannabis Rex. He and a the guitarist in our band said that speaker would cut out the shrill highs and add more bottom. I trust Jeff (and know next to nothing about this stuff), but while all the speakers reviews are very positive, one that caught my eye said something like - very clean sound, not your vintage Chicago tone. Since that's the tone I am after, it made me wonder a bit. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. By the way, I currently play through a '91 Fender Bassman RI, using either a Brown Bullet or Brown Biscuit, or. occasionally, a Shure 533SA.

The Can Rex is a great universal 12" speaker for harp. It's my first choice. I prefer open back cabs for guitar or harp.
The unknown is will the head be good for harp as is and whether on not it needs work?

I have been using a 12" C-Rex in a Weber single 12 cab with my Masco MA17 PA head. (Because the cab is deep, I can keep the head on top even when tilted back in a stand -- I tuck a simple bookend under the handle for support.) I'm sure there are other fine 12' speakers, this just happens to be what I ended up with after trying a few. (Edit: the Weber cab has two panels in the back, I keep the top one off; the bottom one is the one with the jack.) And, just in case: be sure you know the ohms of the head, so you get a matching speaker; the Masco can be set for different ohm speakers.

How much weight do you want to lug around? You might consider a 1x10 or 2x10, vs. 12" speakers.
Anyway, I highly recommend going to the Eminence website and comparing the sound samples of any speakers you're considering. Personally, I find the Rex. a bit dark and muddy sounding when cupped up on the mic. I have The Governor paired with a 10" Ragin Cajun in my Combo, and that sounds great.
I have more experience with 10's than 12's, and as I mentioned, the Cajun is an excellent 10", but the Red Fang Alnico and the RF10C (un officially the Red Fang Ceramic) are my new favorites by far. If I were doing a 2x10 cabinet I use one of each, both killer harp speakers, although the Red Fang Alnico is neither light nor cheap......

I thought this might be of interest. I emailed Anthony Lucas, Design Tech at Eminence, and asked what he thought given the tone I am looking for. He responded that while the Can. Rex is a great all around speaker that would be good for harp, he didn't think it would give me a gritty Chicago tone. Instead, he suggested a Legend GB128 if the amp is 8 ohms, or a Private Jack 16 if it needs a 16 ohm speaker.
