So I am thinking about shelling out the dough to swap out the stock speaker in my VHT. It seems that the Eminence Lil' Buddy is the most popular choice for this, and they are steadily available for 80 bucks off eBay..

It also seems that the Blue Alnico speakers that come stock in the Bassman are very popular too. I can find one of those for about 30-40 bucks more and I am wondering if these blue speakers are the better option?

It seems that generally speaking the Blue Alnico's are higher regarded speakers, but maybe the Lil' Buddy just works better in the VHT? Is it worth it for me to spend the extra 40 bucks or is the Lil Buddy gonna sound better anyway?

Any help is greatly appreciated..

Thanks!

I ended up finding a Blue Alnico for just 20 bucks more so I just ordered it. Hopefully this was a good decision..

What you have is a datum point. When you install the blue frame eminence, you'll have another...you still won't know whether the little buddy might be better so you'll need to get one of those as well. When you change some other element in your amp though, it might make a difference to how it interacts with the speaker. You might change your mic too, which might sound better with one or the other...
By the time you work out all this, your playing will have likely moved on a bit too and your taste might change and maybe you'll prefer that blue frame after all...or you may decide it doesn't really matter much, it's doom alone that counts.
Yeah, the only way to know about this is to experiment, make a bunch of comparisons, probably drop a lot of dough and eventually settle. You learn a lot in the process but it can get costly and you might have a lot of clutter at some point which is worth money but hard to shift. Blue frame is a good decision.

I definitely know what you mean about the need to experiment for yourself (and all of the good and bad things that come with that). I Was just curious because in all my reading I didn't see anything about anyone putting a Fender blue into a VHT (that is not to say that it hasn't been talked about, I just didn't see anything). I thought this was strange considering they seem pretty highly regarded for other amps. I think I made a solid choice. Blue has always been one of my favorite colors anyway..

You're not going to go wrong with either one. I tried the Lil Buddy and the Legend 1028K alnico, which was formerly the blue frame, in my VHT special 6. I have opted for the blue frame. To my ears, the Lil Buddy was a little darker and the attack was slightly different. The 1028K seemed more crisp. The Lil Buddy was loud. I think the 1028 broke up a little better. I also had a vintage jenson p10S in the VHT, but found the eminence more efficient and the sound was great too. I gig with my VHT special 6 using it as a cabinet for my Masco 17N. I like the sound. If my masco breaks down I have a back-up with the VHT.

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it’s doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

I like my VHT 6. The speaker should not be changed. It's great. It will also save a lot of time and money.

edit: it's fun to try other speakers. but in this particular case with the great VHT6 speaker I suggest that the money could be spent on something else. Maybe another VHT6 amp!

Im with Hakan on this one. Recently ABed a stock VHT 6 against my 68 Bronco with a Weber 8F125. You can tweek the two amps so they sound nearly identical. The VHT has slightly more mid honk and sounds fine as is. I also have a 72 Bronco with the Weber Sig 8. I am NOT a fan of this speaker in anything! It is muddy and non discript. Lost in the mix at all times. JMO. Good Luck...BN

PS: My buddy brought the VHT back out here last week and we retubed it with NOS US tubes. Big improvement in clarirty.

Yeah I put a NOS Ken-Rad 12ay7 in there that made a huge difference. Sounds much easier on the ears with that tube. I am excited to see how the different speaker effects the sound. I have nothing to compare the stock one to so I don't even really know how good it really is! Hopefully my desire to experiment will go away once I am not confined to my house with only my computer and harmonica gear, but I make no guarantees..
