My current project, Matthew Robinson & the Jelly Kings, won the Heart of Texas Blues Challenge last night. We'll be representing Austin at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January.

We went into this thing with one goal in mind, to take the whole enchilada in Memphis. I've heard all kinds of stories about the way this thing is ran but I'd appreciate it tremendously if anybody who has actually been there and competed could give us the straight scoop.

Any information on good hotels or any other tips on Memphis itself would also be of great benefit.

Thanks in advance for any info or suggestions.

Hi LSC, good luck! I don't have any advice because I've never been there.

But, I will be competing in the Long Island Blues Society competetion this September, in the solo/duo category. If we're lucky enough to get get to go to Memphis, I'll look you up and we can go get some ribs or something!

Congratulations! I e-mailed you a list of accommodations that give a little discount for the IBC's. Doubletree and Holiday Inn are the closest to Beale St. If you're driving, you could stay further away and save some bucks, but then you'd have to find a place to park, which can be a problem.
I've never competed, but I've been there quite a few times.I'll be there in 2016,too. The venue you play and who you compete against is a luck of the draw. The main thing is to act professional and dress for success. It's as much about showmanship as it is musicianship

@cliffy and Tuckster. Thanks for the response.

Room rates are quite high even with the discount. It was suggested that staying at the "official" hotel is a good idea for networking etc but I can't seem to find out exactly which hotel that may be.

In any event, there are five in our band, one guy is bringing his wife, and the duo winners will probably travel with us bringing the total to 8 in all. I'm getting the sense that with 250+ acts, fans etc, accommodation is at a premium.

Style, showmanship and performance have always been a big part of blues and we certainly cater to all of that. The competition this year in Austin was better than it has been in years. The final was a close run thing and we do believe the thought we put into bringing fireworks to the show and that we have Matthew Robinson was the difference maker.

For 2016 I truly believe that Austin will be better represented for what Austin really is than it has been in years.

LSC: I wish you much luck in Memphis. I it did about 7 years ago as a 1 man band and am glad I did but would never do it again. It is too unnatural a set up for how I do music. It is all too rehearsed, hurried, and busy for me. I did get to see some people I hadn't seen in years, met many who I only knew as as a name, but overall it was not much fun. Sean Carney, who represented the same blues alliance I did, won the thing in the band competition. We became friends since moving here to OH and he told me he did it like 3 times before he won. Go set to win it all but try not to get caught up in the stress of that mindset. It is not natural to do music that way. Say hi to Austin for me. I miss the place. Walter
