Jbone mentioned this meeting in another thread a few months ago,and I stumbled across this vid purely by accident.
Its a great story, well told, and also very sad.
There is a warning at the start.

Great story, beautifully told. That was 1965 in Helena, Arkansas. The summer before, 1964, was Freedom Summer in Mississippi. 800 college kids from the North descended on Mississippi, trying to register black folk to vote and teaching black kids at Freedom Schools. Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman were killed down in Philadelphia, Miss. So local white cops in Helena, just across the river from the Mississippi portion of the Delta, were primed to detonate. They were holding the line. Sad, mean, inhumane. That's the way it was back then.

I remember joking with Curley one time - I said
"Curley, if I win the lottery we could go on tour, just you and me, do the Chitlin circuit" He looked at me and said "They no f****in' way I'm eva' goin' back down thaya - no f****in' way - It ain't safe!!"
He had been up in Canada since the early 60's. It really shocked me how he responded, even to a joke. I had never thought much about how his experiences early on had affected his decisions. Opened my eyes.

my 2 trips to HCH 2010 and 2012 were to holly springs, mississippi to bill hollowells horse ranch...they were both great experiences that probably would not have been possible 50 years ago....whites and blacks mingling and getting along like brothers and sisters...bill and his staff were wonderful hosts

I think it was also to Robbie Robertson that Sonny Boy said..."Those British boys want to play the blues real bad, and they do".

I have known that story above for quite a while it's a great story but also tragically sad I guess it gives weight to the other story about Sonny Boy wanting to return to live in England/Europe.
