I had the opportunity to host an open mic last night. Friends of mine have an art studio and are trying to get some performance art in there too. Short story is that it went well and we all had a good time. Thanks to all who have shared their jam/hosting experiences here. They gave me a good idea of how to run the thing. I learned some stuff too.

As one of the featured performers, I made sure I had a set list of 15 songs in my primary list. These would be divided up into however many 3 song sets as time would allow. I also had my master list of all the songs in my repitoire just in case. This came in handy when one of the other acts did a tune that I thought I could piggyback off of on my next set. Without my master list I couldn't have remembered what it was. So I recommend having two such lists.

I recommend hosting a jam/open mic if you get the chance. It's a great way to work your chops. And it'll give you an appreciation of what other hosts have to deal with. They're figuring on doing the next one in 2 months. I can't wait already.

There are other important things you learn when you host as well, like dealing with the clock, with people who want to hog the stage, helping people sound good through the p.a., and generally managing the music end of a venue. All very valuable to know!

Cool that you had a good experience Chops!

One I like a lot, and I've seen plenty, only allows 3 tunes per person/group. It really works.

I much prefer that each set has a fixed length, like 15 minutes (about 3 songs worth) plus 5 minutes setup/teardown. I've had my acoustic duo pulled at 3 songs when it was less than 10 minutes since we'd been called up, while the band before us played 20 minute extravaganzas and was up nearly an hour.

I went with the 3 song set guideline. And figured 15 minutes for non musical acts. There were a couple from a local traveling troupe that does vaudeville type material. It was a small turn out for the first event. I know a couple more people that want to do the next one. Looks promising.

For now gear is my two amps and one mic. I for see more gear being bought in the near future.
