I bought an inline volume control some time ago and can't remember where I bought it.
It's not a box, it's only about 3/4" dia. and has 1/4" in and 1/4" out. Anyone know where I can get one please?
I'm building microphones without volume control and I'm going to have people asking me where can they get an inline control.
I'm in Australia, by the way, but happy to import if I end up buying them in.

Not sure about the measurements, but Greg Heumann sells inline volume controls at blowsmeaway.com.

Thanks Marc, I do know about those, but there're a little too expensive for what I'm after.

Make some; a volume pot, aluminium tube and connectors. Mine has switchcraft screw fitting in and 1/4" out. If you've got 1/4" in, then you'd need a cable in between the mic and the VC.

" I do know about those, but there're a little too expensive for what I'm after. "

Yeah, but they're worth it. Top quality custom machine work for $65US? You can't get a machinist to hit the start button on his lathe for less than that. I played around with my own kludgey solutions for some time before I realized that Greg had already saved me the trouble. Your mic customers will come to understand that if they don't want a built in volume control, this is the best solution.

Thank you Bilzharp! People don't realize how much fabrication is involved in making those controls.

BTW I haven't raised the price in 10 years......

There seems to be a rash of posts lately about I want a bullet mic but cheap or i want an amp, but it has a have 10" speaker because of my back. Now this.
Ugh.
Listen, I get it, we're all on a budget and want that lofi sound, but be warned, you are going down a well treaded path that many here have seen before.

Honestly, Gurney, Heumann, SimpleMics, Greunling, these are the one shop, one stop place to go. Now i'll drink a cup of shutup...

I paid $45.00 for my item and it works really well and seems to be of good quality as I use it frequently at gigs.
I'm not knocking high quality items at all, but I'm unsure if people here in Australia want to sent away to the US, wait 2 weeks, spend $73.00 Australian plus post to get a volume control. I make other mics with VC fitted and they cost me about $3.00 each but obviously are not in-line.

Greg, I've never worked out how to put pics up on this site otherwise I would. It's a very simple design. It's just black with a roller dial on the side. No brand name unfortunately.
As to where to get it, this is my dliemma. I can't find where I bought it.

So does it have a 1/4" plug on one end and a 1/4" jack on the other? Do you plug it directly into the mic? If so, I guess that would mean that your mic uses a 1/4" jack instead of a screw on connector. Am I picturing it correctly?

I own two 1/4" plug guitar cables I bought years back that each have a slider volume control in the plug on one end. I have used them with mics I own with 1/4" jacks in the mics and no built in volume controls. I can't find them online anymore, but I did find that Taylor has a guitar cable with a rotary potentiometer volume control on one end. It might be an option worth considering.

That's not going to be ideal for harp... the mic would have to have a 1/4" male fitting to get the VC close to the mic

didjcripey, this is exactly what I use plugged directly into my mics with the male pin. I'm not sure what you mean by having to have a male fitting on the mic.

I see, you have a 1/4" female jack in the mic, plug the VC in and then a guitar cable the other end. Derrr... That makes sense. I'm accustomed to the screw on switchcraft connectors; though I can see advantages in the other style.

what is the drawback to using something like this?

As I am reluctantly finding out, they can suck the tone out of your mic signal and let you ignore some of the subtle aspects of mic technique.
Always A/B with and without the in-line periodically to see if it's still worth the perceived convenience.
I'm moving toward the without camp.

@HarmonicaLewinski (and I freakin' LOVE that name)

The drawback of using that is that the cable juts out at a right angle to the mic - it is always in the way, unless you point it straight away from you - and then it just looks funny, and gravity rotates it back around into a bothering position.

My controls aren't the only game in town. But there's a reason there are thousands out there.
