Just wanted to give a public "thank you" to Barbeque Bob for a solid piece of advice he gave me in a previous post.
I had asked about a Shaker Madcat mic because I had been having problems with staying too far off the mic when playing acoustically (I have done a few gigs with a superb fingerpick-style guitarist).
Bob had replied to my post with something to the effect of: "If you're looking to get a pure acoustic sound, why not just tell the sound guy to turn the mic hotter, so you can stay back where you like and it will pick up your sound and hand effects?"
So I did just that, and it worked perfectly. I had a great sound and even the most minute hand movements came through in the mix. The only thing was that I had to remember to be quiet in between songs, as the hotter mic setting does pick up everything.
Anyway, the original post wasn't interesting enough to bump to the top of the list, so I figured I'd just post a solid "thank you" to Barbeque Bob. Your advice made a great difference.

I agree, for those us wanting specific info on crystals, bassman's and harp amp's, valves (tubes), Chicago and west coast blues over the years and on different forums Bob has always been there and very attentive and honest and has some great road and blues recollections!
In fact although I've always known about this forum since it started I only joined it lately because I knew Bob posted here regularly and of course because Adam and his opinion's on all matters blues and what he does for the harp and the whole blues genre in general that was all a big attraction for me to join on here.
So yeah, let's tie one on for Bob as our American bro's would say! ----------

I want to thank BBQ Bob again for his ongoing posts about breath control. At times his advice/directions may have seemed a bit harsh, but he is right on target.
I was initially self taught and without his posts might never have rethought my approach and might have continued thoughtlessly blowing out reeds and blaming the harps.
I want to thank Iceman, too...
And all the harp techs who have posted...
And of course, Adam and Jason!
In addition to workshops, the information sharing of those noted above, and the sharing on the forum in general have helped my harp playing and repairs/adjustments a LOT! ----------

I'm gonna jump on board here, also. I don't post very much, but I check in daily to see what's going on. Gotta love this forum! I've learned a lifetime of harp related/ music related stuff here in the few short years (not sure how many now) I've been a member, which I believe has upped my game tremendously(along with ongoing practice, gigging, etc). All the tips, advice, discussions, videos posted, etc., have been so valuable! So, yes indeed, thanks to Bob, Adam, Jason, and the many, many more that have thrown their two cents into the mix. It's greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, everybody! Some of what I pass on comes from being around some of the old masters, some, like breathing exercises, came from taking the time to go to a reputable vocal coach and quickly finding out that those lessons are easily applicable to the instrument, and some come from teaching myself trhu trial and error as well as falling on my face embarrassing the living crap out of myself.
The same advice I gave Cliffy is the exact same thing many vocal coaches give their students because it lessens any possibility of straining your vocal chords and preventing the need for possible surgery coming because of abuses from bad habits and bad technique and one thing every pro vocalist fears is getting nodes on their chords because having any operation for that is very risky and even though surgical technique has improved tremendously in recent years, you have to do everything you can to avoid possible permanent damage.
I may seem harsh but I'm not one to be beating around the bush and like a lot of pros I've met in my lifetime, it's basically cut thru the BS and get straight to the point and for some, unfortunately, the only way to get thru is use a harsher tone, but even my own "harsher tone" compared to some of the old masters I've been around make me sound quite diplomatic by comparison, and if you need an example of how harsh the old school guys could get, go on YT and get a listen to some of the Buddy Rich berates his band tapes because many of the old school blues and jazzmen ran their "ships" with an iron fist and didn't put up with anyone's BS. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

A key survival instinct in the age of the internet is learning how to separate the brilliant from the bullshit. There is a great deal of the latter - the blind leading the blind, etc.
But Barbecue Bob? He's the real deal. Bob I appreciate your posts! ---------- *************************************************** /Greg
