Something I have been thinking about is how to have a conversation and tell a story in music. The spate of locked treads recently gave me an idea. Lets see if we can have a conversation consisting only of music. I am using words here to lay down a process. I am using Audacity which allows tracks to be added. I have posted a zip file that contains an Audacity project file and a data directory for those who would like to contribute to the conversation and an MP3 file for those who just want to listen.

If you want to participate, download the Audacity project file, add your track, export an MP3 file from Audacity with your addition, and make both the project file and the MP3 file available in your post for the next contributor. The intent here is to respond musically to each other, not to critique each others playing (unless you can do that musically, using your harp or other instrument) I'll bet if these rules are adhered to, this thread will not get locked ! :-)

Nice idea, STME58. I am flat out at the moment, but I would like to have a crack. I used to sometimes do something similar out on the street with a guitarist. He would play a few notes. I would respond. back and forth.

It needs the data folder as well to work as an Audacity file. It should be in the same folder as the previous file with the same name, but something like "COnversation_data". That is where is actually keeps the recordings and stuff.

Thanks Bugsy. I have modified my original post to link to a .zip file that contains both the project file and the data directory.

I seriously love the idea, but the tech/computer aspects (data folders, conversion_data, zips, directories . . .yaaaaaaaaaa!) prohibit my participation

Not ya'll's fault, but my head started spinning by the second paragraph of the initial post. I just don't speak tech. Is there a simpler method to achieve the same result?

Well you don't learn if you don't try. I will keep looking for a way to let the not so technically inclined participate. I am sure there is a way and I will look for it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am encouraged to see there is some interest in the idea.

Hi there! I gave it a try. I hope that the audacity project files will work... 'Nuff said, it's a musical conversation.

Here is the MP3 ConversationstarterB

Here is the, now slightly larger, zip file with the Project

Great idea. Humble beginnings, please join in :)

Shoot, I just finished recording, but it looks like someone got there before I did. Now I have to come up with something else. Maybe tomorrow.

Pistolcat, That is exactly what I had in mind. It is a bit more cumbersome technically than I had hoped. Thanks for contributing. I was able to download and open your project file, so hopefully a few more will be able to add to it.

Rotanna, if you can create a .wav file (the easiest way is with Windows Sound Recorder that is already on windows PC's) and post it where I can access it, I will insert it in to the main file. It may go in out of sequence if someone adds to the conversation before I get to it. Kind of like what happened to Bugsy!

Just an idea, would it be simpler to manage and post recordings with soundcloud accounts and playlists?

@stme58 . . . Thanks for the advice. Part of the problem (though secondary to my antediluvian computer skills) is that I'm on a pretty old Mac laptop.

I am able to record a bit on the Garage Band program that came with the computer. I'll play around with that (see it if can make a .wav file.
