Despite being a longtime Hohner advocate, I recently decided to give the Manji a try for comparison.

The reeds feel sturdy yet responsive, but blow 4 and blow 7 were REALLY out of tune OOTB. Anybody else had similar issues, or did I just cop for a badly tuned one?

Took about an hour to correct and set up for overblows.

Nice harp, but not sure I'm being pulled away from my Marine Band/Crossovers just yet..

Almost all harps are out of tune OOTB. Its just a fact of life. It is not unique to Manjis or Hohner or any other company.

Along the same lines, the Manji tuning is very close to ET with only 5 reeds being 5 cents flat. I prefer the Marine Band tuning so I re-tune my Suzukis to Modern Compromise Tuning and I like them better that way.

Same, actually. I love these things though.

The 4 Manjis I recently bought are in tune (as Tom says, they are close to ET). However, 3 of them were unresponsive and leaky. Some reeds were gapped too high and the reedplates were not flat. So I had to spend some time working on them to get them to play well. I know... almost every harp needs a bit of tinkering OOTB, but these were really bad - unplayable.

After flattening the reedplates, gapping, and some light embossing, they are really nice harps. Very loud and expressive, with good acoustic tone. Comfortable covers that fit nicely in the hand. No issues with tuning.

florida-trader - Yes, I'm well aware of that.

But this one was way more out of tune than any OOTB Hohner I've played. And I have played a few.

Thanks Bob, have seen your link before which is very useful.

Those 4 and 7 blow notes were pretty far from 0, that's for sure :)

Over the years I have loved Suzuki Harps but I did get a Manji on line from the US in C that would not play OOTB. I put it aside and came back to it expecting that with some adjustments it would be fine. Not so as virtually every reed on the top plate was misaligned. Being welded to the plate I gave up on trying to fix it. No more Manjis for me.

As far as I'm concerned, tuning is as important and as basic an adjustment to a harmonica as gapping.

Even more so because you can often get the notes you want out of a poorly-gapped harp - you just have to work harder. The audience doesn't have to know.

But when a harp is out of tune, there's no way to hide the fact that you sound bad! You owe it to yourself and the audience to play an instrument that's in tune.
