The Brits used to own us. There's a huge argument going on here about whether or not we should change our flag (which is of course, utterly British and looks exactly like another country except for a single star).
A lot of people against the idea are all like 'Waaah, our soldiers fought for that flag!' I'm like, 'No - they fought for THIS COUNTRY.'
And really, the British-influenced flag is what I call our 'slave flag' It was foisted on us. I really think that now we are our own country we should choose a flag that represents who we are now.
Of course, this is wildly unpopular.

Look Van brought in lots of tax money for the country so they honor him with a little ceremony
Whats the big deal--i guess if you dont agree with your country's policies - you have 3 choices-work to change things, live with it or go someplace else
Heck our last 2 Prezs have been disappointments here in the US. Time to try and change things again We are still free to try
Van is a funny choice as he is so anti social in nature. I saw him in concert years ago and he performed mostly with his back to the audience
Along with Bob Dylan and Tom Waits he is one of my favorite contemporary song writers
