Anyone happen to know if there is anywhere to get a hold of replacement speakers for the Maxi-Mouse? I've contacted Lectrosonics, but they don't have speakers any more, nor could they suggest a supplier.......

Additional info and questions:

The speaker is 8", 2 ohms, 15 watts. I'm not having any luck finding an 8" 2 ohm speaker. Plenty of 8" 4 ohm out there but I have concerns about the loss of clean headroom and earlier break-up the impedance mismatch may cause. So, the additional questions are:

1. Does anyone have a line on any 8" 2 ohm 15-20 watt speakers?

2. Anybody out there ever try a 4 ohm speaker in a Maxi-Mouse?

3. Any experiences with having a re-cone done on one of these speakers?

After all these years, somebody out there has to have dealt with failed mouse speakers.....

You can use a 4 ohm speaker whitout risk. You will losse some volume, but only a few db (maybe 2?)

Thanks for the reply. I'm not worried about damaging anything, but I do wonder about power consumption and tone, considering it's a low power, battery operated amp.

And wouldn't the volume reduction (and battery drain) be influenced by a given speaker's efficiency rating? So much to learn about electronics...

I'm surprised at the lack of info out there on mouse speaker replacement. Ah well.

OK, FWIW to anyone who might do a search looking for after Maxi-Mouse replacement speakers:

As of this writing, I haven't found any 2 Ohm 8" speakers, nor have I found any 4 ohm 8" speakers that will actually fit into the Maxi-Mouse cabinet; Eminence, Jensen, Weber, and Warehouse brand speakers are all about a half inch too large in total diameter to fit between the cabinet overhangs at the front of the amp. Meaning, you can't even get the speaker into the cabinet to mount it.

Sooooo, don't break your speakers kids......

I find it hard to believe that MM had a custom speaker made for that amp. I have owned, tried, looked at hundreds of speakers. They were all of standard sizes. So you are saying that your speaker is 7 1/2 inches in dia??

You can build a new cabinet, maybe whit a larger speaker.

I never thought to check the physical dimensions of the speaker, but I did see the 2ohm impedance was gonna make it hard to replace. I reckon my mouse could benefit from a new speaker too but it's not gonna get one soon. I checked what the amps are being sold for on eBay. Wow. I paid $90 for mine, and then $30 on batteries. Mainly I use it as a portable MP3 player around the house.

I checked the other dimensions, including the cut-out diameter which is important in these amps, but didn't think to bother with the frame diameter until just before I pulled the trigger on an Eminence 820H. Something told me to measure the stock speaker frame just to be sure..... And wham!, another kick in the nuts, lol. First the 2 ohm impedance, and now this.

My last effort will be writing to the original speaker manufacturer MISCO, to see if they are willing to do a recone. I'm not holding breath though.

And yeah, the asking prices for these amps used is often rather high.

Just to follow up:

No reply from MISCO, seems they don't want to be bothered with inquiries about discontinued products.

Brian at Weber was very nice and made an effort to find parts that would work for a recone, but his supplier only had an 8 ohm voice could that would fit.

I lent mine out to a band tonight, for a gig at the Dark Mofo winter fest. I'm a bit worried they'll blow that old speaker. They came close to draining the battery tonight...I hope that's all that the weird sounds were about. It's a shame these things seem destined to die young (haha mine is 35 years old) on account of a quirky un replaceable speaker.

Hope yours survived unscathed. I think shock during shipping is what caused the speaker damage to mine, the box was beat to sh!t and the MM really hadn't been sufficiently packed/padded inside.

Drives me nuts not to be able to find a new speaker or recone parts because the one I have looks as if it's barely been used, and the batteries are brand new. If it were beat up, or even just bad batteries along with the busted speaker, it would be easy enough to write it off as a not worth fixing up.

If that thing was mine I guarantee you I'd figure out a way to get a speaker in it. Router work. mounting brackets, spacers and trim ring, adaptor ring, 6x9 speaker. SS amps are not really sensitive to impedance mismatch. It's a lo-fi amp anyway. You could stick a jack in it and use a cab but that is cheating. I love a challenge!...BN

Good point BN. They do have an 'output' jack. I've never used it, not sure if it's an extension cab or line out or what.
I guess the low impedance speaker is about battery life?
The guys said they got almost two hours from mine running it 'pretty loud' which probably means flat out. They are 'the dead maggies' gigging on a sailing vessel with portable amps. I should have checked it out, wonder how the mouse goes in among all the Roland's and vox battery amps.

The owners manual says that inserting a 1/4" phono plug halfway into the speaker jack provides a line level signal, and inserting the plug all the way will power any 2-4 ohm speaker.

I have a used 8" (as listed in the manual) Maxi-Mouse speaker for sale. The 2 ohm speaker allows one to get as much juice as possible from the 9 watt amp, puny by today's standards - the original Mouse was only 5 watts (those numbers are RMS into 2 ohms). I have no idea what this is worth so I'm starting high. I'm in NYC. $100 b/o
