Just did 2 weeks in southern Arizona. Mostly around Tuscon, camping and hiking in the mountains and canyons. Awesome!
Hit the Tuesday jam that Deacon runs at the Chicago Bar on Speedway. Had lots of fun. Like the way he runs a jam. Very hands on. He's up on the stage setting rhythms, coaching hooks from guitar players, cutting off the 5 minute solos. Seems a bit odd at first but you soon see that it really helps and works.
Brought my harp commander with me and it was an easy straight plug into the board when he tossed me up on the 3rd set with the 'Dirty Old Men', a couple of guitar players (and maybe the drummer was with them too). The gentleman fronting things out was celebrating his 80th birthday the next day. The house bass player was up as well, a quiet gal with a ponytail down past her knees.
We started off with a country tune or two I did in 1st but switched to 2nd (all in A) and we took off. Drummer was calling for some bluesy tunes so we let her rip. The lead 'dirty old man' was right there with it, having a great time. Deacon even gave us a fourth tune. As I said, lots of fun. The soon to be 80 year old commented to me after that 'you sure can play the crap out out that thing!'. The drummer offered me a gig with them on Thursday night but we were heading up north in the morning. :(

So further up north we had the other end of the stick. Hit a Texas BBQ joint with a live band that called up a friend of theirs to play some harp on a couple of tunes. Ouch! I now see where harp players get a bad rep. It was painful and I'll leave it at that.

But...if you haven't toured Arizona or southern Utah it's well worth the effort.
