I'd like to give 2 wood comb Marine Band's to a friend of mine .. they've been setting a looong time , long enough to have the 'musty' smell .. I play Sp20's since they first came out .. I have these because at the time i bought them .. couldn't find these key's Bb & G in the harps I like to play ..
Of course I don't want to give them in that kind of condition .. I bought them new , so only I have played them ..
I really don't want to disassemble the reed plates .. take off the cover plates no problem ..
What can I use to clean them enough to be nice to play, so there's no 'aftertaste' ? 95% Alcohol ? Whiskey ? H2O2 ? Baking soda (hmmm), uncooked rice ...
I've searched online, and here using the search feature .. 99% of folks buy used harps and are doing complete disassembly's .. comb sealing etc .. I'm a nice enough guy to give them away to someone who can't afford to buy .. but I'm not that nice that I want to spend hours and hand work to make these present's top shape .. heck I don't do that for my own harps ..
Thanks for any tips in advance !

I wouldn't take off the covers unless really necessary, they usually don't nail back on very tight. Would probably scrape any buildup out of the holes, spray a very light mist of vinegar/water in there to deodorize, wipe it off, set it in the sun for a couple hours and let him have them.

Never tried it but who doesn't like apple cider? :) I use a little pump bottle around that came with my eyeglasses, for wiping down harps. Usually fill it a maybe a third with white vinegar and top off with water.

Apple cider vinegar wails for bbq...
I would stick with white vinegar or even the alcohol stuff like band instrument cleaner. I use that pretty regularly because I got a good deal on a huge bottle at a local store.

On wood harps I just throw them in warm water for about 5 minuets then clean them with a tooth brush then tap out an let dry. Some folks say not to immerse wood harps but a short time works for me. What ever you decide, don't use any kind of soap, you will taste it FOREEEEVEEEEERrr...BN
