Seen this on another forum and in keeping with some other recent posts about Blues music or a music labelled as 'The Blues', maybe if we don't label it it might just be consumed and disappear into an eclectic melting pot of gumbo stew that no one really remembers all the ingredients of the recipe!!!

Places like this are around. If you have a really strong scene like that, you'll notice that many people in the audience are musicians. Many places that have a thriving blues scene will have a place like this where musicians can go and see someone truly great on a regular basis.
For example, when I lived in Chicago, there were lots of musicians. On their off nights, they were going to each others gigs. They would sit in and generally cause mayhem. A lot of fun would ensue. The cool thing was you would always want to go because the unexpected (and impromptu) stuff made it really worthwhile. '
It is the same deal in the Bay Area. Lots of musicians. Quite often they go out to support each other or drop in when passing through town. You never know who will be sitting in with other bands.
In places where there doesn't seem to be a good scene or bands that don't have a following among fellow musicians, the scene tends to be kind of dead.

Blues may not be the most popular with the general public but I bet it will be up there if the question was 'What type of music do you participate in?'
Bluegrass, Old Time, Folk etc etc - this is what we should compare the blues against.
Most people don't participate in making music (listening not counted as participation here).
