I bought some used Marine Bands and have the nails removed and drilled for screws. I have a couple questions that I hope someone can answer before I go any further though. I scrubbed the reed plates and covers with the Purple Kaboom, then soaked them in 91% alcohol. There are still a couple of darker stains on the reed plates but nothing like there was before. Will they come completely clean if I keep at them or am I just making extra work by worrying about it? Also, I have some Butcher Block Oil on the way but I have done nothing to the combs in the way of sanitizing. Should (or could) the wood combs be cleaned with the 91% alcohol before sanding, or will the sanding and oiling take care of any potential germs that may be present? Thank you in advance.

Hi Beavis, I say no need to clean reed plates any more, going too far with the cleaning will not pay off in terms of performance; and could cause trouble, physically removing any crud from the comb by scraping/ sanding, and finished with several coats of the BB oil will be fine and remaining cooties if any will be encapsulated.

Sand the combs, clean them, check for flatness, fix the broken tines, drill them.. and after all that time, effort, labor.. you could still buy one much cheaper and higher quality from Blue Moon Harmonicas.

The last time I looked at a bottle of Purple Kaboom, it said DO NOT use on brass. Check it out. Of course we are all musicians, and march to our own beat. ----------
