You can trace the evolution of Stevie's early style though such instrumentals as "Paulsby" and "Square." The C blues scale (1, b3, 4, b5 5 b7) falls fairly easily on the chromatic, and that's what he uses on those, and then on the live version of "Fingertips." It's a tour de force, though.
