Hiya good people!

Someone please school me a bit.
I swapped out the stock VHT speaker on my Special 6 for an Eminence Lil' Buddy.

Ummm... was I expecting too much? I hear little to no difference, and I feel I have a pretty good ear.

I have read that the Lil' Buddy can "take some time to break in."

Thoughts/Experiences?

Thanks folks...

Ha Ha, no experience with those items in particular but some general observations. A friend and myself did speaker comparisons using a Fender Vibro Champ and several 8" speakers. Webers, Jensen, Hepner, Rola, Fender, Eminence...probably 8 total. We found very little to no difference in several. The Weber Sig 8 was obviously the worst with several being good. I setteled on a Weber 8F125 while my friend chose the Eminence 820H. Both of these sounded very much alike. We both have these amps.

As to break in, I feel that all new speakers take some time to loosen up and get to their design performance state...BN

The Lil' Buddy can give a darker tone to an amp that tends to emphasize treble frequencies too much for harp. I don't know what you wanted to change on your Special 6. A Lil' Buddy improved my 1961 Gibson Explorer GA-18T for harp.

Any new speaker, unless sold as already broken in, will need some playing time to sound its best.

Keep in mind you probably putting 3-5 watts through that speaker.
As you know it's a 50 watt speaker, so it would sound better pushed a little harder.

The hemp cones take longer to break in, in my experience.

Typically the difference in tone is
a little darker like Doug said, more low end, punchier and smoother.

I used that speaker in several amps, but it always sounded better pushing it with 15-20 watts or more than it did with 5-7 watts.

Once it's broken in, it should perform better.

Might be my ears, but to me the VHT has a rather dark Tone. I stuck a Jensen p10r in mine after hooking it to a cabinet that had one of those in. Pretty happy with the result. Perhaps not for the studio, but life.. yeah.

Would like a bit more crunch vs compression. But wouldn't want to lose the compression.
My next amp will be a 2x10 with one lil buddy and one p10r I think :)

Crunch from a speaker happens when you push it to break up. You would need a smooth cone speaker or one designed for earlier break up.

I'm not a fan of speaker crunch, I prefer crunch from the
amp.

I'm not a fan of speaker breakup either, mud! You may also get crunch by biasing your power tubes real cold...BN

That's true Barley! I set up my buddies Avenger that way with a 5U4, we both agreed that was the best sound.
I don't remember what I set the bias at?
Somewhere between 18-22.

"Smooth cone speaker?"
"Biasing your power tubes real cold?"
"Setting bias?"

This went way over my head.

Mensh, I have exactly the setup you have, and yes, it takes a while to break in and also, as stated, the harder you drive it, the better it sounds.
It is, of course subjective, but I love mine and I'm thinking of using it to gig with.
I have had a switchable line out installed, so it will be going straight into the PA.

I had a Lil Buddy in my VHT and then swapped it out for a vintage jensen p10-s because I found the lil buddy a little too dark in this application. But since I had another amp with the same jensen, and was experimenting with tones, I ended up with the eminence 1028K which sounds, IMO, great in the VHT.
Not too dark, good break up, definition, clarity and punch.
