WoW!!!
Not exactly the blues!!! But very bluesy!!!
Brendan's take on Chinese music is fabulous.
I could see myself abandoning the blues, and throwing myself head-long into Chinese music!

Has Brendan's Chinese recordings been discussed here.
There's noy much info on Brendan's site regarding harmonica modifications etc.
Maybe Brendan could post something on here.

I wonder how many others clicked on this thread thinking Brendan Powers was actually Chinese... :)

That was some lovely music, with a lot of character. My issue with this kind of thing is that even if I got the very same instruments he plays, I will never sound half as good.

Brendan Power held a workshop in Kingston Ontario last May. One of the many topics he covered led to this piece and this harmonica.

This is from his album New Chinese Harmonica.

It's fascinating that the soulful bends here are all draw bends. There are no blow notes on this harp! The blow reeds are only used to contribute to the draw bends on this harmonica.

Soothing. Enchanting. Spiritual. Lovely, but one needs to be in the mood. Good on Brendan not only is his music great but tapping into the Chinese market has to be a coup.

Andrew, that sounds like it could be Scottish Bagpipe or Chinese. I can't decide which.

Phil: I see what you mean - the drone chord and the pentatonic note choices are similar. But those deep, lyrical bends really nail the sounds of Chinese music.

It's really something that Brendan can make a harmonica sound like that. He used a looper for the drone, but all the rest is just him.
