At a jam the other night, I thought it would be a good idea to put down my C harp and grab a G in order to rip a high end first position solo, even though that's not something I've ever done in a performance setting before. I was wrong. It was not a good idea! :) When I got home I listened to some Mitch Kashmar to remind myself how much work I have to do. He doesn't seem to get talked about much, so I thought I'd share:
I think I've also heard that he tongue blocks all that high end stuff. I thought I'd always be happy with switching to lip pursing for blow bends, but now I'm thinking it might be worth learning to TB up thereā¦

As for me, the video doesn't open...but I own the album "Nickels and Dimes". Beyond technique, he plays and sings with his guts. His solo "Runnin'off at the Mouth" is anthology. And for humor, listen to "Whiskey drinkin' Woman": she pours whiskey in everything, even...in her whiskey. This player is one of my favourites, included lyrics.
Hey TBird, thanks for that link. I think I got some 1st position woodsheddin' in my immediate future. I doubt that I will ever get that sweet 7 blow vibrato that Mitch demonstrates here but I got something to shoot for :) I really like that playing "in the cracks" stuff too. One of my favorite interviews lately.
Yeah, I'm typically pretty captivated by the interviews David Barrett does, but this one might now be one of my favorites. Of course, maybe that's just because it focuses on something I'm currently trying to work on, but I also suspect it has something to do with the fact that Mitch seems so cool/nice/fun in this video... ---------- Be humble for you are made of earth.
