I bought Suzuki Fabulous diatonic reed plates and screws, Promaster cover plates w/screws from Rockin' Ron. I used an anodized aluminum comb from Tom at Blue Moon Harmonicas. After checking the reed plates for flatness I assembled "Frankenstein Fabulous", for about $100 dollars U.S. I have a very responsive instrument. I do not own a Suzuki Fabulous diatonic, therefore this is just an opinion, not a comparison. Peter

Hi, MJ, I've played with the idea of doing the same , since the reed plates are only about $35 and the Fabulous is $250 or more. How does the FrankenFab compare with the mid range Suzukis? i.e. Olive or Proharp?

They're the same reeds as the Manji, as reported by Brendan Power in the past when I asked on this forum. Rockin Ron has those on sale right now.

I wonder how many companies are actually producing reed plates; and more specifically reeds. As always, I'm just curious and have no chips in the pot. It seems I can count them on one hand with a couple of missing fingers at any given time.

Seydel and Suzuki are the most "parts friendly" companies. You can throw Lee Oskar in there too if you want. Hohner is much less parts friendly unless it is some discontinued model. They seem more intent on marketing complete harps. ---------- Tom Halchak www.BlueMoonHarmonicas.com

meaux jeaux, sounds cool.
i did not know that the fabulous uses manji reedplates. so that means the ET fabulous is basically an olive with expensive metal covers and comb.

Meaux, I also have been getting creative with reed plates lately. It might interest you to know that those Suzuki reed plates will also fit a very common pear wood comb. As do these..,

, with excellent results.
You need a drill press, 2x10mm screws and a 2mm tap. Pictures coming soon.

They have those reed plates in the keys of A, D and G in stock, too!
You know, I offer proper combs for those original Meisterklasse reed plates with the exact dimensions for the plate and holes positioned for every screw.

I knew that Andrew. I really don't want to start down the pre-MS Meisterklasse collecting & building road but, I may order a couple of combs from you yet. I know that would make a fantastic harp. IIRC, I've built an A, C,& D and they turned out very nice. I think I've put a G & a C Promaster plates in MB combs with good results but nothing like what could be done with a custom comb.
I will be ordering some from you again soon.

OP,pics??? i would love to see pics of pimped harps.
i have used an arzajac comb for pre MS meisterklasse plates and it came out very nicely.
i also like to mix brands up.on another forum, someone (who posts here :) ) told me you can't do that.haha. i have this thing called a drill.
please,if anyone has pics of custom harps ,especially with non-stock parts, could you post them??
(i ask this,but don't know how to post pics myself :) ) ----------

OMG!! thank you florida-trader!!
that is a nice photobucket collection.i want some of your combs, but it is impossible to decide what to go with.they all look so great.
i have plenty of cover plates for suzuki, but the combs on proharps and firebreath aren't bad.still i will probably go with suzuki from you.
but ,even though i don't use hohner much,i find they can be good backups.i have quite a few reedplates for hohner.
then there is always the seydel tempation. the blue moon acrylic comb in a seydel is the best looking harmonica i have ever seen.but then again, the stock 1847 silver comb isn't bad. ----------

Yes, according to Dick Sjoeberg, these are the last Maple/Mahogany combs he made. He did continue for a while with the dymondwood combs. ----------
