I have been playing blues harp since the late fifties in first and second positions, I think its time I moved things a little, ie: St. James Infirmary in D minor on the guitar or Summertime with guitar in A minor, I know Lee Oscar does harps for the job but I want to have a real go at new positions, looking forward I'd like to get into a few celtic tunes. thanks and thanks for having me.

Welcome to the Forum bennerleyblue. I'm having fun with 3rd position. Working on intonation on the lower octave for a while. I have some rough spots coming down from the middle octave that need polished but I like the sound of 3rd position. Aside from the minor songs you mentioned, don't forget that you can play your second position songs in third. There was a great thread a couple of days ago discussing 3rd position in a major swing.
Here is the thread: http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5480549.htm Edit to add 3rd Pos. Swing Thread ----------

Learning third and fourth positions is a great way to explore the minor modes on the harp, though third can be played major when you fine-tune your bending skills in the first four holes.
Fourth position plays great on the high end. All those high blow bends you use in first position also work in fourth.
Saint James Infirmary actually fits fourth and fifth positions better than third, at least if you use the same melody that Louis Armstrong played. In third position it requires an overblow in the middle octave (though, again, with fine control of bending skills you can play it in the bottom octave). I tabbed and recorded it in both fourth and fifth in the first edition of Harmonica For Dummies. =========== Winslow
