Walter ... Well done. Your recordings have something that I find lacking in a lot of submissions. A solid vocal line (as opposed to a thin vocal string). Altogether you have a great sound.
I'm curious about your process. Do you begin with the strum?
Happy New Year!

Thanks. I have been doing this for 50+ years with tons of hours and 20 years full time. I started with the 1 man band concept when Wilbert Harrison picked me up on a street corner blowing my harp. He put me in his "band" which was him on guitar, harp, drums on his feet. He had a huge hit with Kansas City in the late 50's with a real band and the biggest 1 man band hit to date - Lets work together. I went on to have real bands and teach myself the instruments by ear.
I close my eyes and the instruments start and I see a movie of the song I will sing about. I walk into it and become the song, feeling all the sensations of the movie. I begin everything at once but often things just start up on their own. I never try to dictate where things go because when I do it all vanishes instantly and I am back on earth bored with the instruments. Spontaneous music is something the world is missing out on. Fear keeps people from doing it because one has to bare their soul with no worries knowing it will release all the good and bad inside. I come out cleansed and ready to do another day on earth. I have the drums on my feet, the guitar in my hands, and harp on a rack. I am burnt on dealing with musicians and prefer to do it all the instruments at once live, spontaneous. I do natural music. It is the easiest thing in the world to do. Children are the ones to learn this from before society pounds/shames them out of it. Doing rehearsed, repeated, music, for me, doesn't hold my interest at all. Natural music direct from the soul unfiltered allows spirits to channel through you thus the well never runs dry.
I appreciate your enquiry because I live in isolation having nothing really in common with musicians. I don't think many could pull off a musical stream of consciousness and be as entertaining. Hats off.

Thanks JustFuya. I honestly believe that musicians, and listeners are programed to hear repeated music due to hundreds of years of it being the only accepted approach to music. Thus they can't venture outside that box. Art is a very limited medium if one dissects it this way. In reality it is the easiest thing to do because we all are an endless source of thought, feeling, dreams, and all one has to do is let that come out without the fear of breaking the rules. I find it forever fascinating how limited man is due to the rules he subconsciously is shackled to. We are taught from birth to adhere to these rules and for some reason most can't shake them. I am shackled to all kinds of society rules but for some reason the music one doesn't hold me bound. People here are always searching for new things for making sounds on the harp and I encourage all to try and let go of the rules and let your soul speak uncensored. If you can do it you will be pleasantly surprised at how you feel afterwards. I understand the courageous aspect. I once submitted a rhyme to a poetry publication that was connected to a university. I wrote it after a breakup. It was a soul baring love story with a provocative bitter twist (hook) at the very end. 6 weeks later I received my submission with a card that sported a sad jester and the handwritten words "Seek Help Immediately!!!". (It's a keepsake.)
I eventually put that piece to music but never had the guts to perform it outside of a very small circle. I wouldn't have that problem now but my muse seems to be vacationing with the drama.

You can almost count on rejection with spontaneously created art. I have been rejected more times than I can count from internet forums to big name/big labels/ big tv shows including David Letterman. I use to get angry with it but now don't expect anything from my music except to ease my own self. Art in its truest sense is just that. No regard for audience or even oneself. Just a stream that has to come out. Life is too short to be boxed in. Why do people stay boxed in I wonder often. Walter
I have had some acceptance but it hasn't come from the music industry. Here is an example of how I was usually recognized. On a harp note you can see Gary Primach dropping a bill in my case. I use to be friends with Gary. I also still have the acoustic guitar-cost $15 brand new in the early 80's. It is beat to heck but still holds a tune.

I realize what a drag collaboration can be but with your level of musicianship it seems to me that you could find better than my 5% of shared "Oh Yeah" moments that have made the other 95% of drudgery and/or anger forgive & forgettable.
BUT, I have yet to give home recording a serious go. I'm not quite right with the backing track method so I broke out my guitar yesterday for a few minutes. My 2 1/2 chords are as fresh as the day I learned them/made it up. The bronze mediums are a little rough on my fingertips but I'm going to give the spontobeat method a go. I recalled doing something similar with band mates when we were joking around and singing insults at each other (mostly during practice).
For the record, my music has included harp but has never been harp-centric. I'll leave it at that to delay my banishment for blasphemey.
Cheers!

I have about 5 musicians that I enjoy playing with. They enjoy my spontobeat and there are lots of wow moments. But they live all over the country so getting together is not likely. Mark Rubinstein who played with me in Austin now runs the recording engineering program at Ohio State University. That means we are 30 minutes apart. He is a musical savant as a player and recording engineer and has really helped me with my recording skills. http://markrubinsteinmusic.com/
I wouldn't worry about old strings. I change them when they break and many of my guitar strings are 5 or more years old. I can't relate to backing tracks. They are like playing with 99% of musicians in that I feel like I am stuck on railroad tracks and can't bend the beat at all. People often share stories of doing some dabble in spontaneous music but it never was regarded as serious enough to persue more than a fleeting moment here and there. I surmise that to simply because no one famous is doing it, it must not be any good. People let others dictate what they should think in music most of the time. To me the harp should be sparse in the music. I find it boring when it goes on and on/leaves no holes/is a wall of notes and as with any instrument it kills the imagination and saturates the listener to over indulgence and nausea. Enjoy your journey! Walter ---------- walter tore's spontobeat - a real one man band and over 1 million spontaneously created songs and growing. Thanks Hobostubs and happy new year to you. I am kicking this year off with a bang. Here is my latest project to be. It will be a pizzeria in Reno NV that will train/employ people with disabilities like I do now as a public school teacher only minus the public school roadblocks I continually have to tear down. My drummer of 25 years lives in Reno so once a month or so after we close the pizza down we will do a show. This will be the final piece of my musical puzzle. I already own the recording studio, don't need other musicians being a 1 man band, and finally will own my own club where no club owner or patron can mess with me. Walter

orphan: Thanks for the kind words. I see it as simply following my heart and asking the universe to use me in ways to help those that never asked to be born like they were. I am very grateful my musical concept has not been embraced by the music business because if it was I would never be going where we are headed. Thanks walterharp. My new project to open a pizzeria in Reno, NV, that will employ people with disabilities and the authors parish (he is a minister in England) have consumed both of us. The book was fun to do but neither of us have the energy at this time to put in the time to publish it. He got called to the Lord and my current work with the disabled via The Smiling With Hope Bakery here in OH has inspired my wife and I to open our own pizzeria and continue the work without the headaches of doing it in the public schools.
