I'm going to body a Joe Spiers stage 2 marine band.
It gives an option of either a Black Composite or Bamboo Comb.
I'm familiar with the crossover bamboo comb, but whats up with this black composite comb?

Well Joe would of course be the obvious person to answer your question. I'd suggest you email him and ask as he is the person best placed to answer about his harmonicas.
Having said that the black composite comb is Corian. Which is apparently a very nice material for a harp combs and a lot of players really like it. It does add a little more weight to the instrument, but most people say that they have no problem with that. I'd say if you're in doubt then the best thing would be speak to Joe and follow his advice.

Yes, the black combs are Corian. VERY flat, very nice combs. It's a subtle thing, but IMHO I think Joe's Corian combs have a somewhat more focused tone than Hohner bamboo. But it depends on what your preferences are and what you want to sound like. Actually, I am not a fan of Corian combs in general, but Joe's black combs are truly excellent.

if you are looking at a special 20, not that much difference (or so i hear), but if you like the solid plastic comb and are getting the marine band, then it would be more worth it.
regardless of the choice, it will be an awesome harp

Just be aware that Corian can shatter if dropped. Now, if I was getting a Spiers harp, I would be very careful with it all the time, but if you are a little clumsy it might be something to remember.

The comb is protected by the plates and covers, I've had two come back broke in 3 years. One was run over by a car. They aren't meant to play basketball with. If these were problematic I can assure everyone I wouldn't still be using them.
