...in influences.

2015 is the 110th anniversary of Arthur Crudup. I think he deserves rediscovery.

Why is Muddy famous for what HE did and Crudup is only famous, today, for what Elvis made of him? This is some of the best blues singing I've ever heard. Maybe that's why is has 217 likes and zero dislikes on YT:

Man . . . his voice. It just rips though you; his entire heart and soul seems to be in it. I don't know if it gets more real than this.

Thanks for posting.

You can hear Crudup's influence in Presley's singing, a high, quivering croon, especially in 'That's Alright Mama".Yes, the man listened to the best. Crudup's vocals were richer, with a fuller texture and subtler sense of drama, but Presley did alright by his influence.

I think Elvis' handlers had good judgement and bad ethics. It is an oft-repeated story. You'd think with all them pink Caddy's Elvis could have looked up the guy whose songs put him on the map. Maybe tossed him a buck or a car or a guitar.

Mr. Crudup is indeed an overlooked originator. Hats off to a true bluesman.

The greatness of Elvis' Sun recordings and the very first ones for RCA have been diminished by the crap that followed over most of the next 20 odd years and it's too bad. He fell into the self parody mode two years into his career no thanks to the Colonel and Hollywood and lots of easy money. But DAMN that kid could tear it up.

Yes, he should not have sold out! Then we could visit his one room Graceland somewhere in Tupelo - if anyone remembered where it was...

One of my favorites from Crudup is "I Got a Woman" which he stole from Ray Charles.

I can't find it on Youtube, but it is a good one you should check out if you like the song.

And RCA´s lawyers, and Elvis, fought Crudup until the day he died ...

One of Big Boy Crudup's nephews, Little Junior Crudup is active on the blues scene in the Bay Area. He's a fine singer and entertainer. If you've ever seen him, he will leave an impression.

His voice is soulful, mellow, buttery, with intensity and honest. The description below the video is just as facinating....living in a packing crate on an elevated train track in Chicago....I want to learn more about this guy! good post!
