Please excuse the commercial message but there was a lot of interest earlier when I talked about this element, and I wanted to let this group know FIRST - that I have developed the gaskets (which required making the molds to make them, and the tools to make the molds) needed to fit the element to JT30/BluesBlaster shells as well as Shure bullet shells. I will develop molds for other shells based on popularity of request but these are by far the most important.

The Heumann Element is a high impedance dynamic element made from a modern vocal mic element to which I have made both mechanical and electrical modifications.  It has big, fat tone with plenty of bass.

You can hear it in these videos:

http://youtu.be/CWInbGhOmD4 <— Jake Friel and Nic Clark - Memphis Mini
http://youtu.be/7vHVCBl9RVs <— Ronnie Shellist - 1975 Fender Silverface Princeton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKwGbJW5-Xc <—R.J. Mischo - Sonny Jr Avenger
http://youtu.be/Q0lnx_bvRhg <— Andy Just - Sonny Jr Avenger

The element is $159 and for a limited time I'll throw in the gasket for free.

Please contact me offline if interested.

How is it compared with a 545?

Bassier. Ronnie Shellist says to him it sounds most like an MC-127 ceramic element, but hotter.

Thanks, FreeWilly. I've been saying that for a while but only modified the web site a few days ago. I've shipped half a dozen or so wood mics with The Heumann Element so far, with more on order. Pros Ronnie Shellist, Johnny Hoy and Nic Clark all have 'em.

And based on the private response to this post, within a few weeks you'll be hearing from a few members who have just purchased them for their mics and will, I hope, report back! I'm still very much in opinion-gathering mode.

Oh good. I liked the mic that was making the rounds. That Clark kid needs a bit more bass in his tone. It's kind of lacking.

Hi Greg, will the element be available for purchase separately, to install in a pre-existing JT-30 or 520 shell? It sounds like you're working on gaskets for those.

Well I'm afraid I got ahead of myself. I had enough inventory to make about 30 elements. It became clear I needed more so I ordered another 100of the core element I start with from the mfg, after spending a good 2 months getting them to commit to a price. MY mistake - I didn't ask about lead time. I assumed they could supply them quickly - but when I ordered (2 days ago) they told me 150 days! I'm working on bringing that down (and they are trying to help but no really good news there - they've now said 120 days - but until then I have to suspend sales to cover the customers who have already ordered.

I'm really sorry about that, folks. I should have known.

If you have a deposit with me for a wood mic with The Heumann Element as several of you do - don't worry - I've got you covered.

Sounds great Greg!
I like the idea of starting with a cardioid element instead of an omnidirectional. It should be much less feedback prone.
Can you say if it is a cardioid or super cardioid that your starting with?
Also do you have any frequency response curve testings?

Wow. 120 days. Assuming it's a Shure element, I cannot see why they would need that much time (it's a big company!), other than when they want to start marketing wood bullets themselves before they deliver your elements ;) 120 days. Dear me.

I guess you've got some marketing-departments really worried there :) Good stuff!

Heumann Error, made me chuckle Barley...

But I sympathise with you, Greg. I've been ordering parts for my new twin-harmonica system and it's so annoying when a supplier lets you down or moves the goal posts. You're at their mercy if it's something you can't get elsewhere. Then my customers think it's a Power Failure...

In my experience there is one place that consistently does know the importance of fast delivery: China. I shouldn't generalise from just a small sample, but I've always found it so easy doing business with Chinese companies compared to others.

This probably doesn't apply to your new Heumann element Greg, and I know in the States there is an antipathy to China as many see them as undermining American industry by taking jobs and business away. Hence the "Proudly Made in the USA" banner on locally made goods - fair enough. Chinese made goods are also still seen as inferior.

But that's changing fast. In terms of what I see on the harmonica scene, quality has improved a lot in recent years. The latest Chinese chromatics, from Easttop in particular, are now very well made and excellent out of the box. I think that will transfer to diatonics before too long; Suzuki and Hohner better watch their backs.

Sorry, this is rambling! But my advice to you Greg is that if you have to wait that long, could there be a Chinese copy of the main element that you could get quickly, tweak in the same way and offer as a low cost alternative version until the main part is delivered? Heumann Lite perhaps, for those who don't have a prejudice against Made in China, Heumannized in USA.

Or is that just showing my ignorance of elements?

@Barley - funny!

@ChromaticBlues - the mic from which this element comes has a supercardiod pickup pattern. But that is meaningless. The pickup pattern has nothing to do with the element and everything to do with its enclosure. I don't have frequency response data - just like with other dynamic elements the bass response in particular is sensitive to the volume of airspace to the rear of the element and whether that space is vented or not. If anyone has access to an anechoic chamber and enough lab gear to run the test, I'd love to talk to you!

@FreeWilly-It is not a Shure element. The situation isn't awful - as long as the company can deliver whole mics from which I can extract the elements until the raw elements are available. That will cost me about $20 more per element, but I will certainly take care of all open orders that way. I have a number of customer mics inbound and a number of wood mics on order calling for these elements and everyone will get one, I promise.

@Brendan - China gets better all the time but doing business there is risky nevertheless. There is still a good deal of corruption and dishonesty.

Psst Greg: Me thinks Brendan prolly flies to China and deals with his contacts face-to-face. I would imagne that would make a huge difference in the robustness of his relationship(s).

FYI - the delay problem is largely solved. I've worked out a deal to buy whole mics at a good price until I can get the elements. So - I make a little less $$ but I can fill all orders. So sales are no longer suspended. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner....

Would it be accurate to say that the Heumann Element is closer to the sound of a crystal element than that of a CR or CM Shure element?

Do you miss your old ceramic Mic? the mic that sound so good for 10-15 years ago but now have lost the soul..
I got my heumann element today :)
I test it and the ceramic "soundalike" is there.
Clean but not too clean and nice in my homebrewed blackface deluxe.
I have to turn up the treble a bit to get the same "ceramic-air" in the high notes.
Massive bass and a very good output.
In my 50W tonemonster bassman/Meteor Hybrid it will knock the crowd out.
In the masco channel on my toaster it is more than perfect.
That dirty grit i love.

Buy it!

Great job on by Greg on installing the Heumann Element in my Turner shell. Compared it to a Black Label CR (1250 ohms, if you are curios), that I have in another Turner shell.
It has a little more output than the Black label CR.
Slightly less crunch than the Black label CR.
Noticeably stronger Bass response than the Black Label CR.
Fatter sound than the Black label CR.
Overall I think it has a better quality sound than the Black label CR, which is of course a matter of taste.
Amp use was a Mission Amps Chicago 50w.
Greg is also excellent to work with.
Thanks, Greg
